IN the North American Review for May,
ex-Judge JEnr.. S. BLACK continues the
very, interesting series of papers on the
Third Term ; Question begun in the Feb
ruary number. His article is entitled
"Gen. GRANT and Strong Government,"
and its purpose is to show, first, that the
limitation of tenure of office in the Presi
dency to two , terms is a fundamental prin
ciple of out -republican form of govern-
Ment ; andOtecondly, that not only does
disregard ofl that principle threaten the
permanepei tot' republican institutions,
but that Onalir's third, candidacy is ac
tually a plot ifs revolutionize the republic
and introduce 'monarchy. Mr. LESLIE
Sisrazri writes of " The Religion of all
Sensible . Men, " and speculates on the
prospect of tat religion displacing the
present creeds .of the multitude. The
creed of the intake, he says, must be
capattle of assimilating modern scientific
theories.' GEORGE TICKNOR, CURTIS c,on
tinues his series of articles on "McCrarr.-
Lates Last Service to the Republic."
These papers are specially valuable on
account of the large number , of hitherto I

tain. Mr. FRANCIS H. UtinEuwoon eon
tributes an essay on R. W. EMERSON and
his writings ; and an anonymous writer
labors to show that the United States

of an American . Isthmian Canal, unless
the same shall be controlled by cis-Ltlan-,

"The first appearance of RICHMOND &
VON BOYLE'S Comedy Company in this
city, in their comedy "Our Candidate"
-at the. Standard Theatre, last night, was
greeted by a large audience, who enjoyed
the jokes and comic action of the piece;
-The 'acting and mounting of the piece,
are of the best.—New York World, Jana.-
,

- "It has been conceded by- Manager
HENDERSON that the past week at the
Standard, Theatre, with Ricumosn and
VON BOYLE, in their screaming vomedy of
"Our' Candidate," has proved the most
profitable of the entire season. This is
gratifying, because, although RICHMOND
and Vos Boum are magnificent character
artists, the merits of.' the comedy as a
stage composition can Only be measured
by the enjoyment afforded, and of which
these two comedians. are the undisputed
vehicles, if not the absolute creators.
"Our Candidate" is animated In action,
pure in text, and lirims from beginning to
end with; foe boisterous hilarity. - Current
audiences rarely. go beneath the surface
of a comedy, hence. they have derived a
genuine banquet of mirth.—Neut York
Sunday Mercury, Jimuary ..?:sth, 1880.

NEARLY SUFFOCATED.
An inoffensive fellow named Cider*
KELM; was arrested at Wellsburg,
Thursday, by officer' , MOREHOUSE for be
ing drunk. The police officer put - bite in
the lock-up, built a fresh coal fire turned;
on the drafts and left him. Ab out one
o'clock his mother visited the lack-up and
found him lying on the floor suffocated
from the heat and gas escaping from the
stove. Dr. H. J. SMITH was called, and
after laboring with him all the afternoon,
succeeded in bringing him to life again. .
When found his heart had stopped beat
ing, he bad no pulse and;presented the
appearance of a dead man, and the doctor
had but little hopes of resucitating him at
first, but by Patietit c, ' labor succeeded in
bringing him to life, and 'has him so he
can sit up now and is iu a fair way to re
cover., The feeling over the thoughtless
ness of the officer in thus leaving the
prisoner alone to perish, is very great,
and prominent citizens are outspoken in
denunciation of such a careless act.—Et

,That Life Insurance Companies resist
losses, has the least foundation of all the `-
charges made against them. Prior to
• 1876 the records of seventy-one companies
bad been obtained. There had been paid
without- litigation on 46,038 policies,
$134,625,376.. There had been resisted
• 888 policies, covering $1,751.201. Of
'these, 88, insuring; $389,677, were paid
after litigation, and 110, insuring $513,-
232 were not paid, the Courts having
decidedin favor of the campaisifs. One
hundred and ninety policies, covering
V. 357,292, were undetermined. This shows
that only about,l+ per cent, of the losses';,
