THE Erie Railway Company have issu
ed an order to carry all cans of young fish
that are intended for the stocking of
streams throughout the country free, and
also' o return the caps. Conductors are
ordered to stop trains at streams, when
required, so long as they do not miss con
nections.
Two young men named respectively
COLIMAN and HOAGLAND, ; were arrested
ou Wednesday evening last by 'Officer'
Pramcx, and lodged in the lock-up, - for
unseemly and boisterous conduct on our
streets. Thursday morning they were
given a hearing before Justice You
and lined $3.00 each and costs.

verlißer, writing from Waverly; says-that
"at milestone 75 south from Elmira, the
State line as recognized for nearly a centu
ry, is about oho-fifth of a mile north of
the true 'line." Which means, we sup
pose, that York State would like to
"gobble up" a portion of Bradford

last week : "The decision made last week
by Judge Isparat is one that should be
borne in mind by Justices of the Peace,
especially. It was that the Act of As
sembly permitting trials by a jury of six
before Justices is unconstitutional, and
therefore such a proceeding is void and
:will be reversed."

evening which might have proven very
serious,-had not medical assistance been_
near at hand. He was using a sharp saw,
and in some way the teeth were brought
in contact with his wrist severing, an ar
tery. :The blood flowed profusely. Fort

severe cold which has ever since affected
his hearing. Mr. Imams is among the
most intelligent and brilliant young attor

..—FREDERICK BARNEY, a resident of
this place for some years past, died on
Tuesday morning. He had- been ailing
for several months past, bat had only
been confined to his bed fora short time.
His death was caused by "Bright's Dis
ease of the Kidneys:" He was about 30
years of age, and leaves a wife and one
child to mourn his loss. Tho remains
were taken to Owego, Wednesday morn
ing, for interment. '
—A. Sam Ntwatest, says the Troy
Gaiette of last vieek, one of our most en
terprising business men, who for the past
thirteen years his been identified with
many business enterprises In Troy, has
made anew move that haerrather surpris
ed his numerous friends. Be has bought
out the stock of the -Bullock store at East

store and expect to open a first-class store

The building corner of Main and Pine
streets, occupied by Hotatzaik Passmat's
music store, RDNDELL'S meat, market,
GRADY'S tailor shop, the BMW office,
narrowly escaped destruction by fire on
Wednesday evening of last week. At
about seven o'clock one of the ladies in
Mrs. MADDENI millinery store on Pine
street., was attempting to strike a match
in order to light the gab, when the head of
the match flew off, falling in a box °flight
goods which stood near. Passing out for
another match. ;she returned to find the

BAD ELMIRA.
• Last evening at the depot, says the El
mira Gazette of Friday last, on Erie ex
press train No. 1, going East, was a gen
tuleman who met with quite a misfor
tune. He had come up from -Yennsylva-'
nia to take the Western train. 'While
going about his business he was jostled
in the crowd iu by three men,, and when
he came•to examine himself he found his
pockets had been picked of six or seven
hundred dollars. He 'complained of his
loss to Captain HILL, but it Was too late.
Neither the men nor the' money could be
found.
FIRE IN TROY.
About twelve o'clock Tuesday „night 1
bright light in the Southern part of our
village, and the vigorous ru)tes of the fire

wa in particular. After a bard run, it

was on fire, and when the engine arrived,

Falling into the ashes with which it was
loaded, undoubtedly prevented his being

engine was thrown from the trac and
tamed completely around, the forward end
being next to the task. It is complete
wreck, the fire-box and whole rear end
boing blown almost_ to- shreds. The
smoke-stack was blown off, and the whole
engine shattered, showing the terrific
force of the escaping steam.
Ai soon as possible, persons who were
on the train and workmen near where the
accident occurred, hastened to the assist-
ancei of the injured men. On arriving
when) Mrf LESLIE'S ' body laid it was
dienoveredthat life was already extinct.
An examination of his remains showed
that one of his legs was broken, one
shoulder dislocated, andt the frontal bone
ever the left eye had been driven through
!the skull into the braid, a wound which 1
would - canoe almost instant death; and.,l
which it is supposed Was inflicted by a
flying bolt or other piece of iron.
Mr. MASON, the fireman, was taken up
from the car where he bad fallen, and
conveyed to the house of, Dr. et.sooerr,
where he yet remains,. His injuries so
far as known, are a broken arm, several 1
bruises about the breast and body,' and
his bead and face badly scalded.
NeWs of the accident was at once tele
graphed to Sayre, and Superintendent
PACKER and Assistant GOODMAN 'imme
diately started for the scene, telegraphing
physicians here to be at the upper depot
to take the special car that conveyed
them, and Drs. WoonnußN and JotnisoN
accompanied them. Arriving at the scene
of the accident everything that could be 1 ,
was done for the injured men • still alive,
and tender hands fitted the corpse of Mr.
LESLIE for its conveyance to his late
home in this place, where the remains
were brought in the afternoon.
Coroner HOMET was promptly on the
ground, and summoned a jury whd, after
holding an inquest over the remains of
'Mr. LESLIE, rendered a verdict in accord
ance with the facts as above given.
Mr. LESLIE bad been a resident of this
place for several years past, and was
highly esteemed by a large circle of
friends and acquaintances. Ile was about
forty-five years of age, and leaves a wile
and four children to mourn the loss• of
one of the most loving of husbands and
kindest of fathers. He was a member of
Watkins Post, H. A. R., of this place,
a%d a delegation of the Comrades of the
Post ap..ompanied his remains to near
Manch Chunk, on Tuesday, where the in
terment will take place. .
Mr. MAsOST, the fireman, is , a married
man, end has a wife and three children
livinghere.

NEARLY SUFFOCATED.
An inoffensive fellow named Cider*
KELM; was arrested at Wellsburg,
Thursday, by officer' , MOREHOUSE for be
ing drunk. The police officer put - bite in
the lock-up, built a fresh coal fire turned;
on the drafts and left him. Ab out one
o'clock his mother visited the lack-up and
found him lying on the floor suffocated
from the heat and gas escaping from the
stove. Dr. H. J. SMITH was called, and
after laboring with him all the afternoon,
succeeded in bringing him to life again. .
When found his heart had stopped beat
ing, he bad no pulse and;presented the
appearance of a dead man, and the doctor
had but little hopes of resucitating him at
first, but by Patietit c, ' labor succeeded in
bringing him to life, and 'has him so he
can sit up now and is iu a fair way to re
cover., The feeling over the thoughtless
ness of the officer in thus leaving the
prisoner alone to perish, is very great,
and prominent citizens are outspoken in
denunciation of such a careless act.—Et

EDITOR REPORTER :—Our little village
has been usually quiet, during the past
week, and with few exceptions would
have rolled into eternity as many another
has before.
On last Friday evening at about seven
o'clock, a number of ladies and gentlemen
were - seen to congregate at the residence
•of JAMES MATUER, and in a short time
-had formed a line of march, carrying mys
terious packages, baskets, etc., instead of
implements of war; proceeding -up to
Smithfield street to Church street, thence
down Church street •to . the residence of
Mrs. and Mrs. Witt put B. 'HYING, who
had just returned froth their bridal touk, .
and 'settled - down to the realities Of house
keeping. Having obtained admittance;
the company coolly informed Mr. Inns°
"that,they bad come to make him a vis
it ;" althou-:h taken entirely by surprise,
the young host and hostess soon made the
assembly feel at home, and a pleaitant vis
it was enjoyed by all. Of course the mys
terious packages, baskets, etc., spoken
of, contained nothing lesd than a bounte
ous supply of delicacies, which the ladies
ef-Ulater know so well how to prepare
for like occasions.
Professor. J. B. EMERY "sailed" for
Durant', Wisconsin, this morning, on a
visit-to friends. The Professor's #miling

without- litigation on 46,038 policies,
$134,625,376.. There had been resisted
