THE general opinion of those who at
tended the vntertainment at the M. E.
Church on Wednesday evening last, is
that PHILLIP . Pottrars, as a vocalist, is
much overated, and that there was alto
gether too much laudation of Mr. Pair.
Larsinterlined in the programme. The
younger Mr. Putu, irts is by far the best
vocalist, ~ and we would suggest to the
elder gentleman, that his concerts would
be much improved if be will permit the
young man to do the largest amount 9f
the singing.
MR. Vcsmon's' latest prophecy reads
thusly : " I do not HIM the looks of May,
particularly its middle portion. There
the temperature line "dips," and severe
frosts may be expected between the tenth
and• fifteenth over a large portion of the
United States. But after the middle of
June look for a glorious - but somewhat
dry season." The latter part of this pro
phecy we feel almost like accepting as
very probable, but previous experience
with the e.anuck has led us to doubt most
of his .predictions.

this : Why this distinction ? And is the

THE Scranton Republiean seems to be
considerably troubled about the earning
political campaign in this Senatorial Dis
trict. We::would mildly siggest to that
paper that it is entirely unnecessary for
it to " fret its gizzard " about what the
Repnblibans of Bradford County will do:
The history of. he • past furnishes excel
lent evidence that; the party' here is per
fectly competent to manage its own af
fairs successfully without outside advice
or assistance. And it strikes us that if
the Republican would look more closely
to the interests of its party, in Lackawan
na County, and pay less attention to the
affairs of.its neighbors, it . would be able
to accomplish far morn for the general
good of the party in . the State. For what
would it profit the Republican were Brad
ford County to add a few votes to her
usual majority if Lackawanna should go
Democratic? N.
THE editor of ,the Argus, who h always
eloquent, and frequently pathetic, thus
closes an article on the recent meeting of
the Democratic County Committee at this
place, in his last issue :
•• All this little trouble In our county will soon
pass - away' as ••a summer cloud," and the Jane
roses wilt bloom opou a tranquil party."
—Perhaps this is so Ainstuw. But we
had thought the Democracy might possi
bly linger: ?long until next November.
However, it's your funeral, and you can
bury, the corpse just when you please.
But there is no discounting the tender
pathos contained in your remark that "it
will soon pass away as a . summer cloud,
and the June roses will bloom upon a
tianquil party." We do not remember
of ever reading a more pathetic express-1
ion, except it;be the one "Then hill 'ang
my 'arp hon,,the villas," and we only
wonder that you did not incorporate it.
It would have been extremely appropri
ate.

AND INCID4NT
• At' the conclusion ..f the services in the
Presbyterian Church a week ago last
Sunday, an elderly gentleman who sat near
the centre of the church, arose to his feet
and stated to the audience that the ser
mon delivered there that morning was
otie of the ablest'and most convincing
Courses that; it bad ever been - his good
fortune to liiten to, and that he- thought
it should be printed and given a general
circulation, 'in eider that others than
those present mi lit have the privilege of
reading and being "profited by its teach
ings ;and he said, he hoped and trusted
that the. congregation of the Church
would take immediate steps looking to
that end. The gentleman was a stranger
in our place, and never l'efore had been
privileged to listen to one of Dr. STEW
ART'S schOlarly and able sermons..
A WOMAN'S FOREIGN MISSIONARY
SOCIETY.
The annual convention of the woman's
foreign missionary society, Towanda dia..
trict,.was held on Tuesday, the 13th in
stant, at the Presbyterian church in Troy,
says the Elmira Free Pro*. • Delegates
were present from Towanda. Athens,
Monroeton, Stevensville, Canton and
Sylvania. The exercises opened with a
devotibnal meeting and was followed by
the very able and carefully written ad
dreas of the president, Mrs. S. ,W.
Po ta
nov, after which a lunch was servtdin
the church parlors. In' the afternoon Mrs.
Dr. W. A. Nuns of liornellsville gave a
very pleasing and instructive address be
fore the convention.. In the evening the
Ilev.:Dr. W. A. NILES 'addressed a public
meofing in the auditorium of the church.
in which he made a stirring appeal to the
people to enlist themselves in the interest
of foreign missions. Mrs. BALDWIii of
Towanda added much to the pleasure of
the meetings by her sweet solos, "The
book of life " and "There's mercy for
all" The meetings were well attended
and intensely interesting throughimt.
INTERESTING TO TRADESMEN.
The past-office law provides that
mobthly statements of accounts, bills and
they like may be-sent by merchants in un
seated ,envelopes at the same rate as print
ed circulars„ or with a one cent stamp af
fixed to the envelope. Many tradesmen
halm included in the bills items df credit,
and a number of merchants have done
so. This, by a recent ruling of the de
partment, subjects the missive to letter
postage. The ruling reads as follows :
275. A credit entry- upon a bill, or
statement of account, is theexpression
of a monetary value," and therefore sub
jects the same to letter postage.
It will be seen, therefore, if the bill with
an entry upon it, is started with a penny
stamp, at its destination, there will be
five cents due, or double the usual rate,
less what has, been paid. ,
Merchants would do well to remember
this or the original regulation may be of
no advantage to then]. '

MURDER IN MONTROSE
Shot Down In Cold Blood.
The usually quiet and rtereeful village
of Montrose was thrown into a phrenzy
of excitement on 'Thursday after noon
last week, by the perpetration within, its
limits of one of the most cold-blooded
murders that has been chronicled iu
years. The following account of the ter
rible tragedy we take from the Montrose
correspondence of'the Philadelphia Times
of Sunday last. The correspondent, aftef
briefly alluding to a dispatch previously
published, says :
The prominence of the men and the mystery
surrounding the murder have studied the greatest.
excitement in this neighborhood. The particulars
of the crime, as developed by the examination, can
now be given. The murder occurred about eve
o'clock yesterday afternoon. Of the motives that
led to it nothing is positively knoWn4 but the gen
erally accepted theory I,ls thatthe 4 trouble arose
from stories eiteulated by Wilacin derogatory to the
character of Wartwa`s mac. , i i- ' '
The murdered friarniVllson,' Is about twenty
eight Sear s of age. l' He leaves a Wife and two chil

the oldest and mold suhstantial merchants of Mont
rows, wh-rhas for some years past been retired from
active business. Warren is a soreOf Hey. A. o.'
Warren, pastor of the Universalist Chinch. as well
as a member of the Susquehanna enemy bar, and
is a ybung luau who up to this time has borne an
unspotted reputation and is known as one of our
most exemplary young men. He was until recent
ly engaged in the grocery trade. being the senior
memoer of the firm of Warren k titling, and is
owner of the building now occupied by the New
York Clothing pinto, Warren was but recently
married to Miss Kate Glidden. a modest and peel
'sr young lady of this place. It appears that previ
ous to Wilson's marriage he kept company with
and was engaged, to be married to Miss Glidden;
but the engagement was broken off by her parents
on account of Wilson's intempOrance. Since mar.;
liege of Warren to Miss Giddeu it Is ssid-tbat will
son has boasted of his int ituacy'wl th Warren's wife
previous to her marriage.
Wilson was a farmer and lived with his family
about five milt a from this mace, and untH recently
both families were on Intimate terms with each
other. Yesterday afternoon , Wilson drove into
town and put up his team, as was his custom, in
the barn of his grandfather, Mason Wilson. The
barn has a small door in the back. opening into an
alley between the `• brick' block," as it is called,
and Stephen's book store, leading to Mitchell k
Goodwin's livery stables. Wilson was seen short
ly afterwards upOta the street,Walking arm in arm
with Warren. They appeared to be on the hest of
i i team
terms and went nto the barn where Wilson's lea
was staid. tte her. They were seen in the barn
by a sister or *Mon. 'lle was teen reclining
against a beam, talking with Warred. Ile Wilutell
his sister , asking after their folks. Of what took
place in the bard after that no one has any iknowl
edge. Anyhow, the men became greatly angered
ant Warren's frlendsciaim that Wilson assaulted
Warren with a knife and the killing was dune. in
self-defense. What is certainly known Is this:
A few moments after they entered the barn sev
eral pcople in the vicinity heard a pistol shot and
a moment later Wilson burst open the door in the
back of the barn and ran into the alley above refer
red to, pursued by Warren. Wieling fell as he en
tered the alley, but immediately recovered himself
ands started on • run toward the livery stable.
Warren fired on him and Wilson cried out, as If lu
paid: "Oh, don't, Fred; don't hot me." War
ren did not heed the eppeal and 'fired again and
Wilson ,fell upon his hands and knees, crying
"murder." Warren then ran td the right side of
Wilson and, bent upon finishing his work. again
shot the fallen man in the side. Wilson fell for
ward upon his face , but island up, tipun his hands.
as if trying to escape, when Warren pissed 4s plr
tot close to Wilson's head and fired another' shut,
tom ball taking' effect Just below the ear.
All this happened in fail sight of half a dozen
witnesses, as the place Is Just off from the main
business street, in'nearly the centre of the town,
but before any one could reach the scene of the
shooting Wilson was dead. Warren did not try to
escape after the shooting, but calmly returned his
pistol to his pocket and stisxl looking at his vic
tim. When asked as to why he did it he replied :
"It is all right ; I did it. 1 bad good cense and
consider myself Justified." He delivered himself
to Y. I. Lott, Justice of the Peace, and is now In
custody.
The post mortem examination discloses the fact
that four shots took effect in Wilson's 'body, One
shot, supposed to be the one fired in the barn, took
effect in the• abdomen on the right aide; two
shots lodged In the back, and one in the right side
of the neck Just below the ear. Of the wounds ei
ther of those in Zbe body were: sufficient to cause
death. The case is surrounded by mystery, as
Warren, by the advice of counsel, refuses to make
ant statement. Both parties are very respectably
:connected, and the parents and reiativ .5 of War
ren as well as Wilson have the sympathy of the en
tire community. •
It might be well to add that the evidence before
the Coroner discloses - that Warren Just previous
to the killing and after the arrival of Wilson In
town had his revolver cleaned at llelhuish's Jew
elry store, and bought cartridges and loaded it
thereabout an hour or two before the encounter
which resulted In WHlSJli'lldeath. •
