SUICIDE AT SPRINGFIELD. ;
One of 'themost horrid scenes ever
known here, occurred at Springffeld last ;
week. The facts as wif:hear theOn are as ,
follows :—Aliout the first of the week Mr..
SMITH Ilawisess' *ife died. Se affected
was Mr. U. by this event, that it *as
feared his mental faculties were derang
ed. After his wife's death, ho woirld go
out, and looking up, call loudly to the de:
parted companion. The day following
the interment of the deceased, Mr. 11.
told his brother-in-Law. that he'aiui tired
of life, and that he had contemplated
banging himself. He had fully- decided
to do this, but he did not know just what
1 be should do. .After this he was' cloiely
watched. That evening, as he was doing
his chores, he was mused. After the
premises had been thoroughly searched,
-the neighbors joined tho friends and a
general search was made in the neighbor-.
hood, until between the hours eleven and
tweive,'when a barn,, belonging to Mr. N... 4
i
Voonuis, a near neighbor, - was discovet .
ed to be on fire. Such headway had t _
flames:attained, that all efforts to save t
buildiug were useless. Two horses rt 1
two cows had already perished in.
limes. Shortly before the falling of te 1
flame a blackened t.bject was discovered
on tlie, buruing hay. With great effort it
was removed from the dames, and to the
horror of all it was found to. be the re
irking of a human being,
Some
and
burned past recognition. Some parts of the
body were entirely burned away, ~ others
only the nal , el bones remained. (As Mr.
IlanwriEss could not be found it Was sup
posed that the nirfortunate man had end
ed his life in this horrid manner Arti
tides were afterwards found in -the ruins
which were known to have been) in his
possession. How he took his life, and
how the barn was set on fire will remain
a mystery. 'Two or three years ago =Mr.
Vooniirs', house was destroyed by
,fire.
Great exciteldent prevails in the neigh
borhood. There was about two hundred
dollars insurance on the burned property.
