RUTH MORRISON.
CONTLIWED
er tells where bell going, nor what way
either. ,Pm sure none of the men, nows,
I'll ask the hostler; though ;- if yo u wish;
ma'am."
" Do," said Ruth, but in a despairing
voice, and she . tottered back to the room
like one intoxicated. She had just thrown
herself on the nearest chair, when she
heard the tread of; it seemed, two people
coming down the stairs, and then a quick
voice in the hall, that sent the blood like
an electric shock careening- through her
frame. .She bounded from her seat, and
stood trith.extended arms to listen again.•
In an instant, two gentlemen—one elder
ly, gray-haired, the other, tall and young
-,-passed arm-in-arm; by the window,
down the street. One Wild cry broke from
her : "Call him, call liim ! 0 Ferdy, Fer
dy !" and - She sank senselesi on the floor.
• Just at half-past seven o'clock, the ev-•
cuing of the'29tii of December, the-mail
car from Banbridge drew up at the pub
lic house, or, as the owner would• have
called it, the inn, at Common Cross, that
rejoices in the sign an title of the Gold
en Sheaf. A. flue painted specimen of ripe
corn flourished on the board that swung
on one side of the door, while large get
ters underneath announced that there
was entertainment provided, with good
beds, for man and beast.. This place of
resort was well known in the neighbor
hood; and the buxom landlady, a widow,
fat, fair, and forty, was a universal favor
ite. Rumor had it, at one time, that, the
portly personage whO had been in close
and familiar gossip with her for the last
half hour by the brisk fire in her snug lit
tle parlor, was a facered suitor; but upon
Mr. Marks' advances, the widow had nev
er really smiled. Ile often took, it is
true, " a draught of her best," and had
an occasional friendly chat with her ; but
be was no great favorite with the mistress
of thr. Golden Sheaf. She encouraged
-his visits, for she valued his custom, and
greatly enjoyed hearing the odds and
ends of news the butler contrived to pick
_ up ; but beyond this she went not. Just
now they had. a most comfortable and
confidential communication together on
the unusual events of the preceding day,
when the sound of the mail-car made
• them both start up, and Marks appeared
' at the 'door, with Mrs. McGrath behind
him,_Vidding a candle.
Captain Sinclair jumped down—" Oh,
is that y.ou,' Marks? All well .above?"
- All well, sir—all well," and* touch
ed his hat.
"Here, Mick," said the captain, b4nd-'
ing.the driver his gratuity.
"Thank you, captain-;-thank you, sir,"
lijoined the mau, in the hearty tone of
one who appreciates the donor as well as
the g ift bestowed.
"Take care ; are my traps all here?"
he added, as the man was about to drive
'off. "Portmanteau, small box, coat, rug,
' 'umbrella ; yes, all right."
"Good night, sir."
"Good night;' and the car drove ra
pidly away. .
"Confoundedly - cold night it is.." ex
claimed the captain.
• • " Yes, indeed, sir," responded Ildarks,
and his teeth chattered as he spoke.
" Here, take these things on ; and he
threw his coat and rug on the portman
teat/ that was On the ground. "I'll warm
my feet fiir a moment at your bright fire,
111 s. McGrath, for ',declare I don't think
1 could get on, I'm so perished," and he
stamped upon the doorstep.
"And, welcome, captain, welcome,"
responded tl,e smiling dame • "and may
, be lyou'd let me get you a fittle drop of
something warm ; a little taste of mulled
wine," she added in a lower tone; "'t
would_take the chill out of you better
than anything else."
"No, no, thank you, Mrs. McGrath ;
nothing but three minutes of your fire for
My' feet,' and then I'll be off home:"
"Will you 110 up, sir, uy the 04k Walk
:
; or the avenue ?" inquired -Marks, who
Was still standing at the door.
, . "By the short wayo the Oak Walk, to
be suie," responded his master. " Why
on earth do you ask?" •
: ‘-‘ Only," muttered the man, " that
Corbett's wife, at the gate-house ' is sick,
' and I suspect they're all abed by this,
and the gates Licked." ?, '
"Oh, no matter; I'll gb up the other
way, of course."
Upon which Marks shouldered the port- -
. manteau, first Carefully adjsting somea
• thing that he had in his b, ast-pocket;
and throwing the remaining, 'cles upon
his other arm,.he trudged Off down the
road. ' "Ha !'! he whispered to himself,
" how careful he is of that small hos ; he
- wouldn't trust me with thSt ; he'll take
that himself, if you please. Maybe 'twill.
change owners sooner than he thinks." .
The owner opened a little - wicket-gate
leading off the high-road, and went rapid
ly along until he came to the point at the
lake where the walk diverged and passed
on through the grove. First laying down
thci portmanteau,
.at one side 'near the
stump of a tree, and wrapping up the rug
and cloak, and laying them on it, he put
his hand behind his ear and bent forward,
to try if he could detect the advancing
footsteps; then he looked round careful
- ly, as if measuring, the ground and space
with his eye. " A.! little too dark, but
that can't be helped," he growled, casting
an nn asy glance up to the heavens, where
dense black clouds almost entirely ob
scuredthe slender. light of a young moon.
-
Once More gazing about him, and appar
ently satisfied with his scrutiny, be pass
ed stealthily in among the trees, and en
sconsed himself behind the gnarled trdnk
of au old oak, which, even if it had
been lighter, would have -sheltered him
•.. from detection ; then holding the - pistol,
with a demoniacal grin upon his visa.ce,
he cowered &mu, waiting for his nncon
scions victim, and muttering now and
then : " 'Tis infernally cold. I hope that
she-devil below-there, at the Sheaf, won't
keep him half the night."

RANSOM COTTAGE RANGE,
With the Expansion Broiling Chamber,
SMYTH'S PATENT DUPLEX GRATE.
With or without Low Closet, Reservoir, or Ornamental Elevated Shelf.
The Greatest Combination of Valuable Improvements Ever Presented
After the flattering experience of the past yeas. having had a very large and extended sale., we
find that the Tug RANSOM Cul - rat:a Is univernany contested to be the moat desirable Range of its
class in the marker. Its general features are the same as In the celebrated Ransom Range, which has
for years been considered the finest Range made: It contains the Patent Expansion Broiling
Chamber, which is uldversilly acknowledged to he the only stleccsafol and practical broiling attach
ment-In use. It is also furnished with Smyth's Patent Duplex Grate._Thla celebrated
Grate is extremely simple in its construction. it has now been in active use r.e Wore than Ave years,
and in view of the universally successful expedenco et its operation and durability Miring that time,
as well as the highly satisfactory results obtained by us in our own thorough trial of its qualities, We have
no hesitation in pronouncing it the only complete and successfnl arrangement for removing clinkers
and refuse from the lire-box testa daneously. thoroughly and cleanly, while the degree of combustion
obtained has never, In our opinio . been equaled with any other style of grate.
Tug Ransom Corrsor is A thoroughly fi rst-doss Range in all its portions and appointments,
while the price Is extremely ion , ' It is so constructed that it can he changed from a Low Closet to a
Single Oval Range, by merely lifting the upper part of the ifl.ange from the Low Closet and placing I t
upon a set of ornamented legs. All sizes can also be furntshed with the Ornamental Elevated Shelf.
The large Haled Ash Pan Is taken out at the end of the Range instead of the front—a much more cons
remind and cleanly arrangement-L-and the raga. loos Warming Closet extends underneath the whole
Range. The Hot Water IteServofr is heated entirely from the bottom, and Is of a larger capacity Than
Will be found - on any other Range of this clan. AR the minor details In the eoustroctlon of this
Range hare received the closest attention. It has highly burnished ends, tackle-plated knobs of a new
and beautiful pattern, ntekhrplat t ed panels, nlekle-plated Towel Racks, and the ulutuitlng, and Stange
la in the Mat style. -

Itactical Mints for April.
'Otlls.---!Early sown oats-in our hot
climatf are, as a rule, better than the
late lawn. Our climate is not so fay- -
orable for oats as the cooler northern.
and neitliesstern _ones. There - oats
are heavy and-plump, and seed from
Canada, Nova Scotia and New •
Bmaswick.will produce well for two
or three years. By using need . from
these northern localities, oats may be
grown in the Middle States weighing
front 35 to 45 lbs. per bushel. _
Corn.—This is one of those crops
which suffer from a late frost. • But
the'grotind may be prepared in sea
son :to help on the planting after
wards. As good a crop may be
grown on stubble as on sod if the
right method is followed , and this is
simply to give sufficient manure and
thorough cultivation. 100- bushels .
-per-acre may be produced, and this
means double or treble pay for the
the same labor. Far larger crops
than this have been grown, and of
late years, thinks to the general dif
fusion of scientific knowledge through
[the beet of the agricultural journals,
the average yield of this grain has
been doubled. A yield of 75 to'3o
bushels is now secured where 3o to
40 bushels used to satisfy farmers.
The use of fertilizers and good meth
ods of cultivation have effected this;'
but the same means may be made
available for even larger yields, and
one should never stay satisfied with
a large crop, but try for stillveater
ones.. The time of planting of course
series with the latitude, and these
remarks apply when
. corn-planting is
in seasod.
. Cows.—Garget and abortion trou
ble the dairymen. We believe in
prevention. The former may surely
be prevented by_ due care. As soon
as the udder contains milk, it should
be' relieved by drawing off part•of it,
if there is any tendency to hardness.'
These diseases
. are o ft en a conse
,queyice of weak ness. A fat animal
may be weak for want of food. When
-a cow's time approaches and the feed.
is suddenly reduced, disturbance of
the. system is caused. Circulation
becomes irregular, .and;: congestion
occurs in the most sus - ceptible organs.
The udder is the , principal one of
these at this period, and an attack of
garget is very sure to occur. This
may not always be so, lint long ex
perience. and' observation convinces
us that it-generalfy i. is. The remedy
is obvious.
'Swine.—Corn is high, but so is
freight, and as 800 lbs. of corn may
be carried in a pork barrel, it is :a
question if it will not pay to feed :4)
cent corn to 4 cent pigs. Every
bushel of corn fed relieves , the mar
ket of a surplus, and makes the re
mainder more salable.. This is to be
considered'.. Also the fact that there
is a kind of pig that may be fed the
most profitably and that, one kind is
he one to discover and choose

ORCHARD AND NURSERY.
Whoever sets out - in orchard of
course - does it with the expectation
of a. return in fruit. No one plarh's
Corn or potatoes without considering
if the lan4 will• give him a; crop ;• if
the'soil i e not in the proper eondi•
tion he knows that he must make it
so, or lose seed and labor. Much
'less than corn and :pOtatoes cart fruit
trees make a crop on' nothing. The
trees will struggle along, do the beSt
they can,
•
but such .ors:hards do not
pay, and "run out" Carly. Unless
the land is- sufficiently fertile for an
ordinary farm crop, it should be
made so; no soil Loci wet for such
crops ;will answer, for

land. The plowing should be . as
deep as the character of .the soil will
allow, and the sub-soil plow may gen- j
erally follow the other with benefit.
.The Trem—lt is 'assumed. that
trees Wece ordered some time ao . o;_
they should be at hand ready for
planting. ,It is the custom at nurser-
les - to take up and heel-in a large
stock of the kinds of trees most call
ed tor; this retards the growth, and
allows them • to. fill late orders. •lf
there is a nursery- near at hand it
will pay to make a . bargain,-if po,i
ble, to help dig . the trees yourself,
and thus secure a larger share Of
the roots that belong to them: If
trees, in a long journey, become dry"
and shriveled, bury them, root and
branch, in a Mellow earth for a few
days,-when they becOme plump again.
In unpacking the trees, look to the
labels, as some may ‘ ,come detached
and would otherwise be lost.
1 . . 'Preparing the Trees.—Everybody
wishes to get all he can for the mon ,
eyi and the nurserymen send much
larger tops_ Ito the. trees that the
pruned roots in their positions can
support. It .is safe to shorten the
branches one-third or one-half, - but
it should be done with judgement
and reference to the condition of the
roots. At the same time pare smooth
any broken or mangled roots. •
Panting.—in setting a tree take
timel
to do it properly ; spread the
rdot, evenly and to their full len2th,
andwork in, the soil among them
that there be no hpllow places. Wa
ter3,o
' , ay be used !to carry the, soil
among the roots—MA drilled in by
the pailful, but showered, from a Wa
tering-pot. Do nht stamp the soil
down around the roots, but firm it
carefully with the foot. .The trce .
should be set' no deeper than it stood •
in the nursery: .
Crops.—The soil -of a young . or
chard may be kept in cilltivation.ini
til 'the trees begin to . bCar ; gy4in
. should never be grown,. ex-cept'-'ln
dian corn, lint potatoes and root-cryipi
are- the best. .
irterts.—Destroy the eggs of the
Tent Catetpillar, which are to be
found in small closely fitting Tins
or bands - near the ends of ; smaller
twigs, and may be cutaway. Mane
insect& harbor beneath; tte loose bark
of trees, and 'by scraping this . oir and
washing the trunk and limbs Nith a
solution of soft soap,-much good may
.be done. •To prevent the ascent of
the :wingless - females of the 'Canker-
Worm, use .heaVy - brown . paper.
bound closely.around the tree's trunk,
and then smear with cheap printer's
ink or tar. The bands will have to
be' re-coated at frequent - intervals
through the season.. ' . '
Eons FOR BREAKFAST.—Take four
or' five! eggs, boil them three and a
half minutes, then take" them ont . of,
the shell and beat them up in a basin
with-pieces of butter the size of a
quarter; salt and pepper to . taste.
After well beating, spread the mix
ture on hot buttered toast ;
a hot oven for about 11:;ie minute :4,
And serve hot.
