AN accident to the wagon in which he

journing of one of our compositors In the
village of Sheshequih some four hours.
- How forcibly liras brought ,to his mind
the truthfulness. of the saying "that there
is no small kiss without some great gain,"
can °WTI* realized by those who have
enjoyed ibe hospitality of Mr. and Mrs.
Rutz ,soup, C. Runoun, as did he on this occasion.
'Twas not enough that he and his com

and the horse even was made to partake,
of the hospitality—in the barn—and all

A short visit to Athens one day, recent
ly, leads us to believe that HisTo* is
about right when he says in his last ifia

Railroad . is progressing more vapidly in
enterprise and population than Athens.
Lots of new stores are already up and
ready for occupancy, and more are already
on the way. Soon. Athens and Sayre will
meet and shake hands; and invite Waverly
to unite with the City of the Plain.'
Men excavating, and digging, and carting
away flirt, great heapii of stone and brick,
soon to be converted into large and com
modious store buildings, lie in great heaps
awaiting the action of the contractors,
the ring of the trowel, and the cry of
more snort—more brick,' are scenes now
of such frequent occurremA3 itr Athens as
to create but little if any attention by ye

THERE is now building in Newburg, on
the Hudson, a steam pleasure yacht for
Mr. ROBERT A. PACKER, of the Lehigh
Valley Hailrod4, which when completed.
will be the largest, fleetest and most ele
gant pleasure craft hereabouts. The boat
is to be seventy-three feet keel and as
wide as it can be built and pass. through
the locks, Its engine is to be exceedingly
powerful, the•contractots guaranteeing a
rate of speed of not leks than fourteen
knots an hour. The vessel throughout
will be• a model of elegance, speed and
comfort. !The saloon will be arranged so
as to afford accommodations for twelve
guests night or day. The berths will be
bUilt after the fashion of those in use on
sleeping cars; and during the day can be
folded up, leaving the interior of the
yaeht roomy and more attractive.. We
understand • it is Mr. PACKER'S intention
to keep his splendid yacht on Cayuga
Lake most of the time, but it will be used
in making ills annual summer excursions
to the St. Lawrence. The builders ',have
agreed to have the yacht finished and
afloat by the • middle of May.—lthaca

THE North American Review for April.
has for its leading article a paper enti
tled : " McCua.r.t.ss's Last Service to the
Republic," which covers the whole peri
od of McCi.ELLAN's military career. from
the flank movement to the James to the
battle of Antietam. It is intended to' yin
dicate the General against the charge
that he was over-cautious and -unnemsa
rily slow in his movements, and contains
mady statements of an interesting char
acter. Sir FRANCA litNess contributes
a paper on the " Relations . of Canada
With the United States." - The 'author's
principle object is to show that the re
cently enacted Canada Tariff is not au
act of retaliation against the United
States for their refusal to establish the
•reciprocal free trade between the two
countries in products that are natural to
both. Canada, he says, is desirous of re
newing the reciprocal treaty, and is rea
dy to' concede all reasonable demands.
The Rev. DAvID SWING writes about
"The Failure of' the Southern Pulpit."
`According to him, the Southern Pulpit is
without influence on public opinion in the

be, a great engine for the moral and ma

discussion of the Third Term queition,

by the lion. GEORGE S. BOUTIVELL, who
insists that , whatever may have been the
practice and the teaching of "the Fath

stances make it in the highest degree ex

elected to the Presidency. CHARLES
