destroyed by fire in that place, early on

in the premises on Main street owned and

C. G. SMITH, of Elmira, has been con
ducting a series of Temperance meetings
Monroeton for the past two weeks.
The meetings have been very largely at
tended, and many signers to the pledge
have been obtained. The meeting on

the M. E. Church being fined to its ut
most capacity. , The audience gave the

THE Susquehanna Collegiate Institute
has just been the x recipient of a valuable
present from Ricnslir WOODWARD, Min
ing Engineer at Bernice, and a for
mer student at the Institiite. The pres
ent consists of a large and 646 collection
of fossils collected by Mr, .I:Woonw.otn
from the different strata in the vicinity of
Bernice. The specimens show the im
press of a large number of different kinds
of plants flourishing the latter part of the
Devonian and during the Carboniferous
age; Some of thti Ferns, and of Sepido
dendrils arc the finest we have ever seen.
The collection numbers over a hundred
specimens,' one weighing several hundred
pounds :, with it Mr. WOODWARD sent a
historical chart of strata, from which the
specimens were taken, the letters on the
chart corresponding with the labels on the
fossils. The collection is especially valu
able to cla.sses in Geology, since they are
taken from the formations , near at home.

IT would not do, says an exchange, to
say anything against the boisterous romps
of both sexes who rush into, the post
office every day on no businerf i s whatever.
The post-office is a public place ; it is
liable to be visited sooner or later by
every urchin in the city whale old enough
to walk to it, and it would be altogether
wrong for the press to say one Word
against their loud voices and theierude
actions while they are there. Far be it
from us to utter a syllable of "protest
against the rantipoles wbo daily go tape
post-office for nothing. They undoubted
ly know' of no other... place where they
will be apt to meet so many persons, and
they like to see people and be :seen by
them. But these children could be a vast
deal more quiet while they are in the
post-office if they chose to I e so, but they
do not prefer that course, and no one his
the Power to close their noisy mouths.
For ourselves we love to see them there,
and we would not be guilty of saying a
word that would wound their tender
feelings.

presents , a rare example , of continued

His daughter EMMA died from consump
tion, his daughter MARY from an injury
received in an accident, his wife died, his
oldest son FRANK died from overwork

—Quite a discovery was made by Col.
En. Ovitirrorr, jr., of ToWanda, the
member of congress iron[ the, Bradford
district in Pennsylvania; on Monday.
This is his second term in Congress and
during his first term, he became acquaint
ed with Senator BAYARD, of Delaware.
They had some conversation about their
families, going back a generation or so,
but Colonel OVERTON did not give the
subject any further thought. On Monday
he received a letter from the distinguish
ed Delaware statesman, in which the an
nouncement was made that Colonel Oven
t3li'S grandmother and SenatoOsrann's
mother were isters. This brings the
gentlemen into very close relationship.
It however does pot extend to political
lines.—Elmira Fr¢e Preu. - -
-DECKER D. DEWITT, cashier of the
Wyoming National Bank, of Tunkhan

eighteen years of age. At the time of
his death he was' in his sixty-first year.

and retained the office until the retire
ment of the late SAMUEL STARK when he
became cashier, and may truly be said
to have died in the harness. He 'was
twice Prothonotary of the county and for
twenty-five years closely confined to office_
duties, which eventually told upon a
naturally rugged constitution: He leaves
