A motion was carried that the paper read by Mr. Corse be solicited for publi cation. Adjourned ti 11.7 P. M., to meet in the Baptist Church. EiENING SESSION. - Opened with musio by the orchestra,. followed by a quartette by the glee club. Miss Miun;e Clink recited a fine selec tion. The esFay on "Progres.s" was such as might have been . expected from the lady who wrote ron "Hard Times," 'and was highly praised. Mr. Thompson moved that a copy .of Miss Clark's essay be requested for_ pub lication in the School Journal. • Music—" Gloria," by the Glee Club. The manner in which Mr. A. B. W ood wtirth's declamation was rendered was another illustration of the adage, "a lit tle nonkenselnoii and.then is rtlisbed by the best ofimers" The declamation; "Mary Queen of Scott.," by J. B. Tracy, ,interested the audielnce, Rev. Mr. Tilden was introduced as lec turer. Subject—" The Teacher." The term does not apply alone to the person who presides over_ a school room; but whoever and whatever helps 'to de velop character. The difference between the barbarian and the citizen of our en lightened country is caused mainly by education. A vote of thanks was tendered to the musicians, and to Rev. Mr. Tildeit and others who hall contributed t 6 the ; enter tainment of the evening. P' Miss Lizzie Moody rendered "Little Greveleen " very beautifully, " The Skat er's Sons" by the Give Club. Rev. Mr. Curse pronounced the bene diction. The Association adjourned to meet in the Congregational ,Churck at 9 A. 3f. MORNING SESsIOti Devotions by Professor Burgan. The first resolution was called for, and—the discussion opened by Mr. Burgan in favor of false syntax. Resolution carried. The third resolution was opened for de bate. Mr. Crawford thinks the object of the resolution is to acquaint directors and• teachers with the, school law concerning certificates and contracts. This business form should be observed as- it obviates much trouble. Ernest Thompson referred to the cus tom of directors in cull:toying teachers without examining certificates and thinks the teacher's word ought to be sufficient. Superintendent Ryan thinks it proper that certificates be examined' dud the pay be proportionate to the qualifications. The itineracy among teacherS makes it necessary to be cautious ; while with teachers fn graded sehools , and those hold ing professional and permanent certifi cates it is not se essential. A vote was taken and the rgsolntion carried. J. Bovingdon called , for thU second resolution. 30\Z. Wood asked what in ducements are offered to,teaehers to im prove' themselves with - the wages given 11 (LW j Mr. Ryan asked the ladle's to ex press their views of the Te.solution. Mr. 3leßee nelieves it to be the fault of townships, not directors. Mr. Bovingdon would raise the wages' in. proportion to the win k perfuriped ; and another argument in favor of the resolu tion, was that many'expenses aro neces sarily incurred fur the benefit of the school. 3lr. Crawford adyises teachers to be cautious in signing contracts. It is the duty of directors to carry out the wishes of the people, and, cannot pay what they would otherwise be willing Eugene Thompson does not wish the tone of the yesolution to condemn the ac tion of all direArs, as many of them merit praise. Z. Wood thinks the conscientious director will do what he believes to be ri g ht, regardless of the opinions of the people. Mr. Ryan amended the resolution as follows : - 1 ,ilesolved, That the reduction of wages 1 in sonic of the townships of the county,- at a time when teachers are zuakihg greater efforts to improve themselves, and when produce of all kinds has nearly dou bled, is unwise and uncalled for, . The amendment was accepted. Mr. Phelps thinks the teachers should be moderate as they receive pay in Ipro portion to persons in ier employments.i.( Miss Doty replied that tit" price of board should have bee lowered. Mr. , Mos3iip stated th, enqz , igh is paid in educating children away f in home to support good schools at 'bode, which would-be an advantage to all concerned. Mr. Ryan said teachers' wages are low ered With the shrinkage in all property, but never raised commensurately, and when retrenchment is necessary it is made in teachers' wages. Our teachers are well qualified, and some of the best are leav ing the ranks because of the reduction. in wages. Mr. Moscrip said that firmers can not afford to reduce wages as it necessitates a reduction in the educational standard. Miss Blown also spoke on the subject. The resolution was carried. Music by the choir. A lesson in annuities was given by I. S. Crawford. The-study of annuities.makes a knowledge of progressionswcessary; so the different cases were hash explained. lie objects to formulas if used without Annuities at simple and compound interest weft' made clear. , •, To'Professor Burgan was assigned the subject of 'reading. He gave some hints in regard to teaching it. • First, adapt the I6ssou to the:capacity of the pupils ; as sign the lesson and have it thoroughly studied ; the teacher should pronounce the hard words and the scholar after him; in teaching reading introduce the sounds of letters. Professor Ryan had been asked to talk on school management, but the President asked him to change it to a little talk about the fair for the coming yeati The managers promise more room for 4n exhi bition, they aLso offer premiums for the best exhibits. Ire asked all teachers to have examinations and preserve the pa t • pers. Then followed the _election of officers President, I. S. Crawford ; debts, E. T. liurgan, Ernest Thompson, T. McCollom ; Secretary, Ella Spalding. Ulster was decided as the place Of hold ing the next meeting. Superintendent Ryan asked that those ! who had commenced teaching kr inform him at .once, that he may visit their schools. The following voteL of thanks was of relied :Ife.toirc4, That the thanks of this Asso ciation are hereby extended to the people lof Smithfield for their kind hospitality, and to the Trustees of the Baptist And Congregational Churches fur the use of. the same ; also, Revived, That we extend our thanks to those who have furnished us with mu sical entertainment, and to those net members of the Association, who have con tributed to our enjoy :I:tent and profit; also, Revived, That we extend thanks to the retiring officers for the able manner in which they have condUcted the Associa'.
