AN ImruEs.sivE AND Toucrima SCENN.
—The Church-of the Messiah (Universal
ist), Rev..WILLIAM TAYLON Pastor, was
on Sunday last profusely decorated with
tloivers. Thawhole church was-fragrant
with their Incense. Crosses of white and
green, Mlles, eamelias, =elms, -and-oth- -
ers in varied arrangement, made the.lta
tar beautiful as it Waafragraut.
The occasion waathat knoirn by that
Church as Cutdrin's.Sunday set apart
-at the morning service, for the chriaeu
ing and dedication of the little ones in .
6111IST. Twenty of them, varying from
one year to 14 of age,i were brought . for
ward by their parents, and thus solemnly
consecrated ; the parents pledging them
selveslo teach the children:the Lord's
Prayer and the Tot ComutambttentA and
to bring the children up in "the nurture
and rule oititirin of the Lord." As each was
baptised, the child Or parent' of it) re
ceived front the pastor a small white bo
nnet, plucked from-a cross on the altar,
-so arranged for this purpose, and pre
sented with the injunction to mcserve it,
with the date and name attached, and as
the child grew, to explain to it the oeca;
sitm-when it was bestowed, and how; and
why ; and thus let .it be a constant Me
mento of Cunts T's life,
.death, and love ;
'of the parents pledge, and of its own duty
of gratitude and love therein.
The Church was crowded to its utmost
capacity, and there was probably not an
Immoved heart or dry eye in the building
as the ceremonies progressed. Probably
every denomination in the town was rep
resented there,_ and the "spirit of Unity
in the bond of peace," was fully exempli
fied in the common interest and sy-tnpathy
of all.

ms Ili rourr n : We desire through
the columns of your paper to make a
short statement, fur the purpose of cor
recting a misapprehension. on the part„of
some of our taxpayers with regard to the
amount expended for the support of - our
poor fur the-last year. According to the
Assessor's report, we paid out the sum of
$5,037.93, which sum at first sight appears
unnecessarily large ; but when lac deduct
the amount of our indebteduem at the
commencement of the year, which amount
is nearly $1,500, the figures are reduced
-to a little over $3,500; which is not a
largo amount, considering the - nuipbei' of
persons we have been obliged to support.
We do not considei - it necessary to give a
detailed statement of each individual case,
as that would occupy too much space and
-
fould interest comparatively but few of
your readers. When we first assumed.
the duties of the, eilice. the borough was
paying a little more _than half the amount.
of the present poor tax, with about. tine
third the number of paupers, and were in
debt about a Thousand doll.tr.s. In order
to meet the demands upon us, we were
obliged to increase the tax to the present
Percentage mills on the dollar),
which amount i barely suflicient to meet
our necessary expenses. We have tried
iu every instance to practice the closest
economy,. and we court investigation, be
lieving we can fully satisfy the public that
not one dollar of this fund has been-inis
aililied.
The fault fres in the system by which
our poor are supported, and nowhere else.
It costs at least twice, if not three times,
as much to support our poor non as it
would if we had a suitallle place where
they could be kept together, and where a
large proportion of them, could do some
ihing for their own support. We are
pleased that there is a fair prospeet of our
being able to have a home for these uii•
fortunate ones, and sincerely hope that
every taxpayer of the county will look to
his interest in this matter and give us an
overwliehning majority for a poor-house
when the matte' comes again before the
people. [Signed]
