As_ the Lime is approaching when
these pests of the careful housewife
wilt begqn their work, a word. or two
concerning them and their habits May
not im amiss. There are fonr distinct
varieties--the clothes moth, the fur
moth, the' carpet .moth and - thefbair
moth, each extremely destructive, and
taking its name from the artiele'which
'it most delights to destroy. All moths
workin the dark, hence etothing, furs
or carpets are exposed to the
not i.e so much danger as when put'
away in the dark. The worms are
torpid and.do not work during then
cold of the winter: Early in the
spring they change into Chrysalids,
and again .in about three - weeks they
transtOrm into. winged Moths; when
they Ay about • the. house during
the evening until may or June. Then
they kiy their eggs, always in dark
places, and immediately after die.
The eggs, which arc too.small to be
detected 'with the -naked eye, hatch
out in about' two weeks,, and the.
young worms ita t
met e.y proceed to
work. As the pzirent . moth takes
good sure. to lay the eggs where they
will de most harm, the worms lic; , in
to gnaw:the substance abOut it, and,
rolling- it-self into the fragments.,
sleeps, and cats the whole • summer
through, though: from the havoc it
makes, it appears to eat more than it
sleeps..
When a house once Ix:conies 'thor
oughly l'ufeSted whir these odious'
pests, it. is 'very diflicult to extermi
nate them.: Many remedies have
been suggested : -camphor, pepper,
tobacco, earbOlie acid, etc., and these
'are -useful • tti a certain , extent, for
moths will not deposit their eg! , s
where these substances are ;: . •but
eggs once laid, none of tlic . e reme
dies will kill them or the working
moth. The best way is to . .clear out
all tire closets and trunks very early
in the spring, wash the .slreh'es thor;
oughly • and often ; go over them, the
floor, and all corners, 'with a sponge
dipped in a mixture of fitranonia and
alcohol. Old; worthless furs or
wollen articles should he disposed of
or thiown aside, and not lest to har
bor moths. The inside trunks
may be thoroughly sprinkje.l with
ammonia - a:ud alcohol. The, e..1. ,- es - ut
carpets be brushed With the same
wash with good result. —.
