RETRENCHMENT IN SCHOOL SALARIES
A sensible little sermon on retrench
ment in school salaries is preached by the
'.l-;teninglirnal of Chicago, from this
text: "The -Quincy Common Council
Talks of lteduentg the Salaries of School
Teachers, arguing that their pay is 'dis
proportionate to that of hook-keepers and
clerks." The Jou.rnal goes on to say :
If the education of the. average book
keeper or clerk is all that is demanded of
t eachers. for city schools, then let the don:
pensation be the same. But it is the cus
tom now to require teachers to submit to
examinations which can only be passed
after many years of close study, costing
heavy outlay of time and money. Clerk
and book-keepers seldom take their posi
tions'except as stepping stones to higher
places in business professions. The good
Of the schools requires that teachers be
encouraged to make teaching their life

be paid enough to make Tiring something
more than a perpetual drag, which it now
is, in most cases, while fault-finders still
harp continually on the old string—reduc
duction. Lower salaries than are now
paid to teachers in most places means the
expulsion. of brains from the profession,"
There are young ladies and gentlemen
going out front Prof. Bull's school this
spring., to tench during the summer, who
will receive only from *2.00 to *3.00 per
week. They have studied long and bard,
at cep CUM; and sacrifice, in preparation,
and in their business of teaching will re

upon American teachers, and the small
