lumberman of Williamsport, who bad
been in very .feeble: health for the past six
months, died at his residence in that city,
Friday afternoon last, aged 45 years. lie
was President of the Lumbermen's 'l4.

ran for Mayor on. the Republican ticket a
year ago. Ile served for a year and a
half in the rebellion, retiring with -the
rank .of Lieutenant-Colonel of the First
Pennsylvania Cavalry.

"It seems; the prisoner went to East Can
ton to a blacksmith shop, and there re

bad luck (for him) would have it, he was

this place; and compelled to surrender,
and was brought back to this place where
he was taken North to meet.his friends."

ted suicide by cutting his throat. The
nests spread with lightning rapidity, and
in less time than it. takes to write, crowds

rying to the spot where. the dreadful deed
was committed. A coroner's inquest was
114, and after a full bearing of.witnesses

"That in a stable near the. residence of
deceased, between the hours of 10 and 11
in the morning of March tStb, the body of
Allen McDonald was viewed by the :Jury.

jurors say from the causes, manner, 'and

Deceased was a man nearl •
old,,and had always been a bard working

pioncers of6iistluehanna County; had un
dergone a gilt many hardships and ptp=
vations in cafitlife but never complain
ing of his tot. 'Always strictly honest iu
his dealings,, and beloved by all who knew
him. Ile.leaves a largo circle of friends
who deeply mourn their loss.

Elmira Free Press, from Canton, this
county, under date of March 25th, says:
Unusual excitement prevails here on
account of the death of Alice Scudder.
There was a post mortem ; examination
held last evening. Drs. Davison, Bullock,
Brooks, Cleveland, and student Parsons
Were there. Dr. Smith did, not attend,
yet he attended Miss Scudder during her
sickness. It has .not been learned what.
the verdict is, as there was an adjourn
went until Wednesday at 5 P. at., on ac. ,
count of Capt. J. N. Shaw, our Burgess
having to attend court at Troy, Pa.. I
'understand J, 9. Scudder was opposed to
the examination, and makes some threats,
but I think ho had' better let the law
take its course, anti the guilty be punish

Tuft Mount Pleasant correspondent of
the Honesdale, (Wayne County) Citizen,
writing tinder date of March 19th, says;
"A Bible, pdongiug to Rev. .Mr.. nos.
se.m., lies before us which was printed in
London in 1589, lacking only 10 •Cars of
being; 300 years old. It is a copy of a
translation made by some non-conformist
refugees who wont from England to On
neVa in the Ilith century to secure more
perfect religious liberty, and was called
the ”Anglo-CenevesC" revision, but was

ule," from the.peculiar rendering of Gem
esis 3 1, where the word tyron is trans
