THE dwelling house of Mrs. JOHN
vENEtt, in Athens: was burned pn Thurs
day morning. last. The, fire was caused
by the explosion of a lamp. Part of the
furniture was saved. So rapid was the
spread of the flames, that two boys sleep
in the secend story barely escaped being
burned. .

mains of Mrs. ALYRED BALDWIN, who
died suddenly at. Montrose on Sunday
night, February ',hid, revealed the f4ct
that death had resulted from congestion
of the lungs. She had been suffering from
a cold for several days previous to her
sudden demise.

M. M. SPAULDPIOW dwelling house in
Troy, narrowly escaped destruction by
fire on 11jonday morning last. The fire

dence in Wyse; on Monday evening last ~
of typhoid pneumonia, after an illness of
but, about. a week. Mrs. PIOLLET was
beloved in life, as she will be mourned in

dispbsition. Sho was the daughter of the
late Hon. JESSE MILLER, and mother of

Barclay Yird,.was very severely injured
by the cars on Monday afternoon last.
She was picking up coal on the track, and
in attempting to pass under the cars they
suddenly started, catching her clothing
and dragging her over the ties and frozen
ground for some little distance before
they could be stopped. No blAme at
tached to the train hands, aS they - were
unaware of.her presence tuktil they dis
covered her beneath the caret... Dr. Plum
was nalled.and attended to the little suf
ferer. .
FATAL. ACCTENT.—RILEY S.IIITIT, son
of WILLIAM D. f.MITII; of Carpenter's,
aged about 18 years, was instantly killed
at the saw mill of J. C. FAUSONS, on
Thursday moridng - last, by a load of legs
upsetting upon him. The unfortunate
young man had been in the em
ploy of Mr. l'AnsoNs only that week, and
was engaged in hauling logs. The tenni,
in going from the main road to the yard,
had to make a sharp turn, and as it made
this turn the upper runner struck on .
some obstruction, upsetting it, the logii
falling across hint; crushing him to death
instantly. Esqui VERMEI LTA, of Grover,
held an inquest, and rendered a - verdict
in accordance with the above facts.---Can

that on the 'evining of February 22d, " a
large delegation of Odd Fellows from
'Lodge No: 961, Langdon, Lodge No: 655,
Roaring Branch Lodge, No. 657, .Gran
ville, and Lodge N0. ,- 8.-13, Leroy, visited
Canton Lodge, No. 321. After a very
pleasant time had been spent in the Lodge
room (where by- the way speeches and
congratalttions bad free swing) the visit
ing brethren were escorted to the Central
Hotel,' where an excellent supper had
- ueenprepared. The party enjoyed them
selves until nearly midnight, when they
returned to their homes well pleased with
their visit."

WE were taught in early years;—and
have ever endeavored to follow the teach
ing—never to ridicule the work of Nature.
That when we meta person in our walk
of life whose physical development deno
ted the ago of manhood, but whose con
versation on the other hand told only too
plainly that mental development had pro
gressed no farther than childhood, to ex

said that children and imbeciles must
have some moans of amusing themselves,
and if the poor unfortunate boy finds

Os Saturday last a coupe of young.men
from Burlington, who had imbibed rath
er too freely of the "Ardent," got into an
altercation with the hostler of the Elwell
House, and from words came . to:'blows.
The porter of the.Elwell House coming,to
the assistance of the hostler, a lively
scrimmage was - the consequence, and'
pitchforks, shovels r etc„ were used with
a freedom that ameunted to recklessness.
The porter receifed, a- bad cut .over the
eye, and, the other parties were more or
loss damaged in divers places about t h eir
person. Chief Bousssmilingly gathered
in the evildoers, and speedily gained - for
them an audience before his Honor, , Jus.

ACCIDENT ON TILE: G.G. I. (Sr, S.—The
passenger train on the G. I. & S. road
due in Ithaca at 6:40 met with an
accident.at, Spencer. Summit about six
o'clock Tuesday Feb 23, in which

ductor Thad W. Seely, was painfuUY and
one or two others slightly injured. t The
accident is said to have been caused by a
broken switch gate. Two trains. were
standing on the side track at the -Surainit
and the switch had
, been properly set to
allow the northward
.bound passenger
train to pass them"; the engine and tender
had crossed the switch all right but at the
instant something
,parted and caused the
baggage car and passenger coach to leave
the rails and plunge with full speed into
the foremost- engine on the siding. Mr.
.Seely bad just risen to his feet and was
standing in the side of the passenger
coach when the collision occured. One of
the.. passengers say sthat the shock threw
the comluctori - sek'etal yards, and that he
struck violently, against the iron seat
frames. llis injury consists of a broken
collar bone. ~Two passengers, Mi. Allen
of Trunrmsburg, and Mr. Cowen, of
Auburn, were slightly cut about the face
and express messenger Carey was bruised. ,

DISTRICT CONVENTION ON TITS Y.M.C.
A.—The first District Convention of the
M. C. A., ever hold in Northern Penn
sylvania,. was recently appointed at Mans
field, by a committee of young men of Ti
oga County. The time fixed was Febru
ary 21st. A local committee of four made
arrangements for the programme and the
entertaiummt of delegates. The- themes
chosen for discussion gave general satis-,
faction, and brought much new light into
the minds of that community in regard
to the work and methods of the Y. M. C.
A. Besides legates from various parts
of the district, including Potter, Tioga
and Bradford, and a few from over the
N. 3117 York line. Rev. S. A: TACWART ,
Pennsylvama State Secretary,. and Mr. E.
D. INeEnsm.t., International ) { Railway
Secretary, were present to add to the con
, vention tiM inspiration of their experience
and their earnest words. All the exercises
