Hos. J. M. MASTER, Insurance Com
mis:doper of Pennsylvania, speaks as ful
lows in his last . A.Liinal Report, in regard
to the lapsing" Of life insurance policies :
1 ' The impies,l;iou prevails that it is to
the advantage of companies to have their
policies lapiefor Imo-payment or premi
min; ;: that, at:.• a rule, they contrive to
bring about this - method •f termination,
and then refuse:- lin- optittible settlement
with yolit.:3-ltolilerS This impression is,
to a ;neat extent, idunded upon miscon
ception. The policy-holler who pays
one or two pretniums, and then discontin
ues payment, (hies; a positive injury to the
ounpany. lid cost of carry big his insur
ance and procuring a substitute -Is, in
many cases, greater to the company than
the umoutt of premiums paid, and he is
emitted to no tel A large'proportion
of the forfeited: glides are of this charac
ter. Then it must be remembered that
policies on gor-0 lives, which it i t desira
ble for - the ("mural*y fo keep. are notch
more likely to lapse for non-payment of
premium s, than policies on bad lives
which it is dosb able for the company to
lose. Thc. latter class make every exer
tion 10 keep th i cir policies alive, while the
former are Mai-IN:it:a. The body of the .
coinpan3's pitheies are deteriorated by the
lapsing pow-ens. The company is dam
aged by the dciiertion of its best lives—
and yet this class .of rolicyr holders tare
very apt to feel aggrieved If a liege pro
rol ion or pn!thilllns are het returned 40
them when they retire."
This is of ihicrest at this. time, in vi4w
of tin; action of the Mutual Life Insurance
Compauy of Now York, regarding its re
tiring niemb4s. The Mutual has been
'charged with injublice to old policy hold
en:, by Many Will meaning person, who
are profoundly ignorant of the 'true prin
ciples of mutual life-insurance.
