THE C TriEs;.--4n the old
country the stow of preparing a Christ
.mas Tye is al ist universal, and we , are
pleaged to notice coming into quite gen
eral observitnce in A ierica. The cost of
arranging a tree can lae raded acc:irding
to the taste or ability of l e family. In
the first place select a neatlyvhapedlliCro
hick, sprue.i or fir, of suitable size, then
spread a IM-ge sheet over 'One end of the
pallor carnet, and put a good-sized ,tea-
chest in the center of it. . •
The lower limbs of the tree -must be
sawn off so that it can be thinly fixed into
the box ; and :any
_small heavy articles,
like weights and flatirons, can be put in
for ballast, to keep tbe tree thickly in
place. Then fill up the box with hard
eoal. The chest must be concealed with
some pretty material ; old curtains will
answer the purpose, or the Ame - rican flag;
and a white furry rube is also. suitable.
\Drape these articles close to the tree, and
\
let \ them trail a little on the floor, to make
•
a giOveful sweep.
NoWthe tree is /Planted and we must
proceed to decorate it. Makb' chains of
popped corn, strung together with needle
and thread ; at \ least a dozen yards will
be none too much for a large-sited tree,
and the pore white festoons entwined
amid the dailc gFeetiltranches of the tree
produce a fine effect. \
We Must also haVe papet charrns made
either of glazed scarlet, giffbr silver ; cut
the paper into small stripS, four inches
long and not half an inch in width; fas
ten the two ends of each strip together
with dour paste, and make half of them
into rings ; then take the rest and make
into similar rings, but first slip each sttiir
throu,ll two of The dried iings before join
ing the ends/ In this manner all the slips
of paper are interlaced and we have a .
chain ofvings which will greatly- adorn
our tree. They must be festooned in lobg;,
grseetul loops froth limb to limb, and the,
effect Is very charming.
All this Work the children can do,' and
it adds greatly the entertainment of the
loug evenings at, this FCZISUII. They can
also assist in civering English walnuts
with tinfoil or gilt paper, and in filling
• apples with cloyes, which will serve, to
keep moths from-the drawers of our bu
reaus, and therefore make, acceptable
presents.
If we posses a cracked mirror we must
take it to the glazier's•, and ask him to
cut-in into two-inch squares.. Around the
edges and across the -backs colored paper
must be pasted, and long ribbon loops at
tached to the backs by which to suspend
them bt hind the tiny-wax candle's, where
they will do duty as reflectors. -
Fancy glass galls of all colors can be
purchased fora few cents each ; and *sev
eral dozen of colored Wax candles, with
tin rests to attach them to the tree, can
be bought. • Self-balancing candle holders
can also he rental at most toy shops, and
need only to be placed on the branches.
If these cannot trestained, common cop
per wire can be heated a little, and run
up through the candle a little; and the up
per end can be twisted\tlrmly about the
branch. .If the wicks a n brushrd over
with a little kerosene put o with a cam
el's hair . brush, they wilight very
quickly. :
The light, showy gifts can, be T;pend
ed upon the tree, but. the heavier \ ones
must be hid upon the piano or table. , or
else wraptx-d in paper and arranged
around the base of the tree. :A pair of
scirsoce must be in rcadineis to cut the
Kitts from the branzhcs. When such a
tree is trimmed, filled - with gifts and
lighted, it is indeed a beautiful sight—i
graceful green.pyramid, with numberless
little jets of flames' trembling and flash
ing mirrors, garlands of bright buss—all
brightness, sparkle and color.. Try it, fair
friends, and see for yourselves bow lovely
it Is.
AmoNo the unpleasant things mnect
