13 ji.ktzlfigal Repariment Italian.Be.s - • 3L Metcalf, of Battle Creek, Nick .+Yan has an article on the supenoki • -4.-ty of Italian Bees, in one of our e 0 'changes, from which we make the , ,follawing extracts: "Alter an exile , rience of eighteen years in breeding bees I have never Seen, until the past season, a qtieen whose • workers i• and drones exhibited uniformity in the yellow bands of the first, and thi; mottled hues of the second ; together With that.. .constant and never-failing glossy - golden color of the young queens—ivithouti black tips or speck of blemVl--L•so ...much admired' and coveted, by every, lover ofthe beauti ful ia the . apiary. And yet .I salt 'the originals of the first importation --owned one ofthem—and several of the litter Ones,' -directly from thOr native 'habitation. T one . these queens prOduced dron es or queeni.of uniform color, although I am relia bly' informed that_ many instances have ,been knotin .in Italy. where bright yellow queens have uniformly . produced ff royal ..daughters . exactly like the mother, althOugh the rule with indifferent colored queens was quite the reverse.. That the workers - of some dark queens will bear the broad . yeilow bands ofthe best, and show, - with other 'stocks bred - l - from • the same / parentage, a kindly distio sition, while the latter exhibit 'dark er bands, or a narrow stripe, is no . proof of purity: of the queens, .buft . quite the :ontrary. What then ! are the tests of purity ? I answer, color, mainly; disposition, nest. The form of the Worker be 6, also, to the praC- . used eye, goes a gO s od way, but it is quite useless to' thernovice. if I were to select for myself from an unknown_ stock of so called Italian bees would take only those having queens of pure bright yellow, whose workers exhibited . the broadest and brightest y' llow lands ; and if drones abound I, would have a particular eye to such' of the young of these. as ;had not yet I; come of age ; or had taken and see to it that- they were all _ Frightly_marked, and every one ex-. ti , .; I - 3- like hik brother. If any of these ikist emerging from their cells looked dubiously dark, I -would pass them ty, no !natter how bright yellow the ~queen, or what the workers might.be. if a few dark or Oren black drones should be f iund that had evidently tiken wing, and black or hybrid bees ':were, anywhere about, the hare tact darkrones' being found in an otherwise standard colony would noti 'he conclilsive against the stock, or that thes e drones are the progeny of tlis yellow queen, by any means, for the reasQn that the drones are, so to ileir cornets,' and r tiable.to be found frequenting the 'wrong fold., •• or is the disposition to sting uponl slight provocation conclusive of im- , purity of blood, although it is true that tile pure Italian is:less liable to get up on his ear,' or'yours, than his black congener. But-this is so much a-matter of education of the bees 'l)y their bee-master who has them in charge that not much stress should be placed irpOti- that, unless ppteed, you knoW how they 'have en handled, for 11., i 4 comparatively easy matter . to get a man, beast, or honey-bee to 'go for' an intruder." jiOtiSELIOL ' D P.I.ANTS.-A lady asks for information ; concerning house .hold plants. -There is none tharwill , ive more satisfaction than the gem niunis. The Uppiopriation for that township w as received this rear long be fore some Boards bad made' the Annual Report. One Report was -sent by the Board in, September . r To.prevent any de lay nest' year let the members of the Boards so keep the accounts, and manage the business of the District that at the or ganization of the neat Board, the first meeting isi June next, the Annual Report may be signed by the proper officers, and at once forwarded to the County Superin tendent. - Why cannot-Bradford County - rank first in this regard ? I ' I ' SCHOOL 4vrs.--Bunerintendent Wilt was informed during his term that no More copies of the School Likv could be furnish-. ed before the winter of 1818-79. , Many directors are asking ,fot. copies, and a letter has been sent to the iDepart meat asking for a supply for this county. The Superintendent his held twenty-one examinations during the present fall, and has one more to hold, November 23d. When , the examinations shall have been completed, about 550 teachers will have been examined, of whom probably some thing over 400 willihave received certifi cates. Many of those receiving certill- cates are too poorly qualified, -but it has been necessary to permit them to teach in order to have enough to fill our schools and have a reasduable surplus: More. than enough to 1,14.p1y the schools have received certificates. There are from 75 . to 100 others who bold professional, per manent or Normal School certificates, making a total of 500 teachers for our 400 schools. Many teachers havereglected to apply for examination,,llch \is surely no fault of the examinerir4oliki glady license any number w4ol . ove to ue properly qualified. The object of Superintendent thus far has been to induce teachers\o become better qualified and have better eaCterts, by producing and using the best methods, by systematic, patient self-culture, - 42 by attending schools. Doubtless there area few who though lesSly I ask . for private examination, en- 1 dorsemeut, or certificates for .riends with out examination, who do not consider that, if impar7l and true - to his oblig a -. tions, a Superi tendent must refuse, but there is a large 'class of Chronic grumblers who selfishly arid willtully persist in such demands, occasionally one who would bribe or bull4lo6e. have indivtdual refusals, all may ex . pect in the future as in the past, .that no partiality or neglect of duty will knowing ly be permitted. To the retiring President, J. Andrew Wilt,, is the credi t largely duo. - At the time of his election as President lie was not engaged in teaching, yet was a regular attendant and worker in the As iociation, gins manifesting his interest in the cause of education. We- should like to see some old teachers of our county elected President of this organisation, but they need never expect such recognition unless regular attendants at the sessions. A number of the younger teachers of our - county came from the most distant town ships during very unpleasant weather, to attend the last meeting—one toe lite for the stage walked a number of miles. These teachers are among the most sue-, cessful, and they certainly are among the best qualified as their papers at the last examination plainly show: .They realize that the Association is a power for good, and that it is the duly of each teacher to aid and encourage it by attending and striving to become better prepared to win success. Such teachers will find a way through any obstacles to obstacles to sue cess or make it. We aro aware that, in many - eases, there are difficulties that prevent attend ance,, but with far too many the, way is 'plain and easy enough, but the with is wanting. Ma.
