: that, which was greeted by an excellent
audience on Tuesday night, at Mercur
Hall, - who' "assistesl" (in the French
sense) at the performance of the AnaAL

go, verily . a god-scull. : . " What is really
wanted," says Professor TYNDALL, con
tending for the doctrine of evolution; "is
the lifting power of. the ideal elemeit in
"human life." One :fancies the ideal ele
ment perennially !present in such a per
formance as the one Of . which we speak,
and, indeed, We think the learned Profes
sor's meaning to be well interpreted in art
(where everything "ideal" must find ap
propriate expressionsuch are as that
which wrought :m experience so'delight
ful, so profoundly. linctianizingis this en

xnEUS charmed, the p ro-his.orielverld, we
inusthelieve ; and the "lifting 'power!' of
music may salvo thel problem of existence,
and set. at. rest all the perplexity of , the
doctrine of evolution. . " What songs the
Sirens sang or what name' ALCIIILLEs as ,
sumea when he bid himself amongst the
women," says the learned Sir Tuomas
,
! BROWNE, "are themes 'for very vague
conjecture." However, be that as it may,-
i.it is our bounden' duty to declare that
never has any audience in this vicinage
been more charmed and with a better en-'
tertainment than ;the concert of . Miss
lloor's company on 'Tuesday night. '
The theme of ballad music, and the in
terpretation of its songs, was, the burden
the performance. _ And this was finely set
oil by instrumental masterpieces of the
great composers. A song the world over
is alike .a incrnory and a seutuneut-that
"one touch - of nature 'that makes the
whole world kin." The music of the hal
hid and the poetry of the-song,-are as sun
light to the hutrian heart, or the fragrance
of a flower -to the sense. Not less than
their idyllic beauty is the power of songs.
Men fight, and love, and plight their
troth in songs. The '..Mfirseillaise made
France a republic and in turn an empire ;
and Die \Yacht' atn Ileiti, - wrested the
conquered provinces from the conquest of
its counterpart,. 'The elan-shng of a Seior
thli tribe sounded the relief of Lucknow,
, and the well, known apothegm that tells
how laws are less than songs has rung the
changes of a strange truth in every civi-.
. lized nation of that western world The
' sung is an eternal - entity ; bu tte the
heart, the heart i b, the inseparable times of
.•int.n,'l.lte ballad that sings of love, of sor
' row, of home and kindred, and famil
iar facts and household 'fancies and atfee
tions-that is the sl,lll of•sting itself.
And, so, in the'heavy ways of present
w.,,es, there is comfort in such songs. Set
in the heart of the muSie of the grand,
old inasiers, we doubly welcome' iu times
like these, such an entertainment as that
of Tuesday night. 'ilk weil-ordered corn,
bination 'has all the commendation at our
- cmionand ,on its Hay to public favor
"through the provinces," .

family. Mr. BIUDGEMAN IS a tenor of re
markable purity of tone 'and compass,
whese higher notes are produced with ex

efiert rarely met with. In the duet "Ex

and execution were eminently manifest.
, • Mr. Houma isa baritone of remarka

We are prone to regards perhaps the
most , classic performance of the evening
was that -or Signor Tonutmet, a talented
young pianist, pupil of LAMM; and grad-,
uate of the Stuttgart University, as we
afeinformed by a circulai accompanying
the programme. Signor TORRIANI main
,tains a strict adherence to the classic
methods and a conscientious .. trchnique.
The Faust Waltz by LISZT. in part first
gave little opportunity to display his real
merits as an' artist ; but the, Polonaise.
Opus 72 by Liszr in E major in part sew
and brought out the brilliant execution of
this performer in its full , strength, his
phrasing and the eveness and firmness of
his trilling, the blending of the shades of
expression, stamped Signor Tonnts - xt as
a disciplined, and highly finished pianist'.
'The evening closed an entertainment
whose variety, purity,_ and excellence
above all, perfect adaptation to the possi
bilities the provincial concert room, it
would be hard to rival and, all things con!-
sidened, perhaps impossible to surpar*
within, the opportunities of the town.
