REPORTER—Dear Sir : Here in Troy as well as elsewhere the topic of the - day seems to be the polit ical situation. It is discussed both pub licly and privately, and this very discus- sion of the subject is encouraging to all who believe in an honest straightforward policy, and who want an honest currency. I say it is encouraging to this class of men, because in the simple discusiou of a subject the right will continually gain frknils and supporters, while the wrong will always lose. • However . there are not many of. the Greenback persuasion in Troy. They did not.have - g,otel success. in the beginning. For a number. of weeks they tried very hard to have a meeting, but failed com pletely. But finally by importing a few "stool pigeons " (one was a , very large one, and told us he came from among the ancient Democrats of Towanda) and mak ing great efforts generally, they managed to get together a few men, who went. be cause they Lad nothing else to do, -and some small boys, who went "to ace the fun and do the cheering," and called it a "Greeuback meeting." But it was a' complete failure, for the'statement of the principal speaker that he had been a Dem ocrat and 'stumped the county as such for more than fourteeu - 3 ears, did not seem to be exactly, ,the kind of talk, to make converts to tne Greenbackers. From the scarcity and silence of the Greenbackers since this meeting I infer that this togeth er with the stating of their principles (?) was enough of Greenbackism for the peo ple of Troy. The latter took their de feat gracefully and gave prominent citi zens of Forksville - serenades in the even ing. It is certain their playing, for sweet ness and clearness of tone, harmony and perfect unison, was held by hundreds on 'he fair - grounds, and by- some of 'the judges, to deserve the palm. But it must be difficult for award judges to please alt on such ,occasions. There was a grand Republican rally at ' Forksville on Wednesday _evening, which proved in every respect a perfect success, • although held in a` hitherto Democratic county, and in a Democratic hotel. The Hon. John I. Mitchel and E. M. Truth is pow erful and will prevail. Great was the tribulation on Wednes day night from lack or. bed capacity for the sleeping accommodation of the unex pected' crowd. But this unprecedented pressure oily called out the unsarpassed kindness of some of the citizens, who did What they could in the emergency. Sam uel Randall, Esq., especially exerted him self; and the store of quilts and comfort aides brought out and spread on offlite and ball floors, were as multitudinous as they- were gladly made available. The weather was delicious. Those who tarried until Thursday night encountered Wind, rain and fallen • trees.' As I write the first snow of the sqason has been fall ing at Laporte for two hours. S. F. C. WRY GREATEST AND 13EST-We See some envious mortals Ciltject.to the Chien- go & North Western Railway being called the greatest and best line in the country. What means greatest? Is it more. length of line, miles operated and business trans- , ported? What meaturbest? Every and knows the reply. That this line is great est, a few facts will demonstrate.—lt op earates neatly twenty-oue hundred miles of road (2,0'18 to be exact) and reaches nearly every important point in Northern Illinois, in Wisconbin, iu Northern Mich igan, in lowa, Minnesota, and rums, many lines into Dakota. What otlier line be gins to traverse so -many States?—None Not one. A road 500 miles iu length is a long one. A thousand miles makes a great line. Whit, then, should be said of one 2;loomileii long?—Just think of it—lf it was laid eastward from New- ,York it would reach more than two-thircis.of the way across the Atlantic Ocean, or from the pine -clad of ISlaina to the sunny shorts of the GMf of Mexico.—Great iS it not ? Thou for a moment look at its bus- uess. ' It carries 'billions (think of what millions Mean) of pa'asengirs a year, to say nothing of the silver and iron, , and lead, and lumber, and cattle and hogs, and thousands on thousands of car loads of wheat, and corn; and oats, and horses, I sheep, and the thousand and one other kinds of freight that is grown or Used or handled by the people of,the great North west, through which it' is the 'great iron highway: Tako 'down your map raid - i trace its routes. Fix your eye on Chicago as a starting point. Westward, in nearly an air line, you will trace its .California line until you' reach the Missouri I River. at Councilßhins, opposite Omaha—hers is a single run of nearly 500 miles. Back to Chicago again you look North-west, and folloW another of its routes through Mad ison, the Capitol of Wisconsin, through the pin - e woods of that whole State and into' Minnesota, and on .to St. Paul a4l Minneapolis this is 4011 miles • more. Again poking from ,Chicago you can trace a- line through Sparta, !Wisconsin, La Crosse, in the same State r [Winona, Owa tonna and New Alm, in Minnesota, and North-westward far intol :Dakota-L-here we have 62$ miles mono of road. Again coming to Chicago we see' two lines run ning , northwardly—one , along the lake shore to Milwaukee, and_thence ta-Fond du Lac, and the other 'running more in land, through Janesville, Watertown, etc., also to Fond du Lac,l thence 'North through Oslakimili, De Pare, Green Bay and Escanba, to Negaunee, Ispbeming and Marquette—herb is another 440 1 miles of road. Then 'we have a line from Chi- OBSERVER cno to Elgin, Rockford • and Freeport,' another from Clinton, lowa, to Anamosa, in the.same State, - another friim Kenes ; ha, on Lake Michigan to Rockford, in Noith ern Illinois, and after.all longer lines we, have many abort spans to traverse before we have found out all of the Chicago l & * North-Western Railway. • Is it any wonder, then, that this line is called the Great Western Trunk Line? So far ahead of anything else is it in-the way of road bed, cars, locomotives and hotel -coaches, that even. its competitors are obliged to acknowledge that it is the best. The passengers to or from' California; Colorado, Utah, Nebraska, the , Iriack Hills, Minnesota, Manitoba, the East; West, North or South, should see that they are furnished tickets, by this great line. -Forget not'that this alone of all the roads west or north of Chicagti, - run the world-renowned Pullman hotel ear No other western road has. Pullman or any other, form of hotel car, no matter what they eisitn.—The. Rerald. = . WEST WYSOL—On the morning of the 23d inst., we (including ourself and better hell) made a tour by private ednveyance to the nortea.stern part Of the county. Af ter leaving the Wysox fists, and reaching the summit' f the bill, we halted a little time to view the 'Y valley which liks sh smooth and level along the. Susquehanna river. The . beautiful farms and farm houges, K it h now and thewa church edi fice to be seen Justin distance, reminds one that the.farmers do not neglect to contribute freely of their substance to the suppOrt of the Gospel, as well as beauti tying their own homes. We passed' on over the hills and through the valleys finding large farms and well-to-do farm ers on either"side of the road, with now. afid then a woods-reserved for wood and timber. - At CaMptowis we* reached the Wyaltusing creek ; along which as we pass • t ed itp tbeicrioked stream wonotieed with a - good deal.of interest, not only the good farm* and buildings, but the; old-fashion ad denerted honsee which 'no - doubt had been occupied by families of at least three or four generations. They were one and a halrstorles high, 'with large stone chitii neys and small windows, and built dole to the ground. Them buildings remind us of the clays when our grandmother homed tallow candles, - carded" wool by - hand, ope rated tie - spinning wheel, wove in- the old-fashkoned teem, and rooked her babies in asap - .rough.- We continued our parsley up 'the stream until we reached the large farm and residenoe of H. B. Van Gelder, Bsg.• who, years ago was stage proprietor of the 'route between Towanda and Montrose. ' Somehow ho bas managed 'to pick up piles of stamps, and has become the own er of one of the best farms in the vallei. Here we stopped,' and were 'warmly greet ed and made welcome grata of his house. By the Way he is not a, bard-shell Demo mut, judging from the two newspapers we- found on his table—the New-York Timis and BRAPORD REPonren, which he called two very excellent papers. After ' enjoying `two Sumptuous meals and a good bed, the following morning our host conveyed us with a good rig , to Leßays title, a distance of five miles.. Here we found a pleasant village, inhabited by a friendly and hospitable- people, and sur rounded by a country which they have a right to be proud of. After aplease" nt chat with a few of the inhabitants, we re turned to Stevensville, on Wyelnaing creek, where -we, together with several friends enjoyed' a splendid dinner with Mrs. W. C. They deal in dry-pods, have a grist mill 'in operation days and night, ral enjoy, the reputation \of being prompt and reliable business Men. We told him for gracious sake, the most vote fer JOSEPIi too. Thenervices of oar young friend, Bonn RIDo WAY, have been secured to teach our district school the coming winter.
