novel affair came off on Friday afternoon

In fact, the young ladies as well as the
old maids of late have become much. at

Mn. EDITOR :—Already T count months.
Vof absence from old Bradford, my place
of residence for fifteen tears. I acknowl
edge to a desire to see ,familiar faces and
again to greet taco and true friends. At
this writhig, 4 October Bth, I am stopping
. ,
at Redfield, Oswego Co., N. Y., where
shall tarry for a little time. I have not
much that would be new to Bradford
folks of which to write. Recvnt political
movements in the Empire State have cre
ated some excitement in political circles.
At s Saratoga it is said that the Conkling
wing of the Republican party run things
to its own liking. Your readers are, most
aware orate two wings of this par
ty in Central New York. The adininis
tration wing is led by 'Mr. RonEters, edi
tor of the Utica Herald, and 'the anti-ad
ministration wing is led by Senator CONK
LING, whose organ is the Utica Republican.
-We learn from - the Utica Obserrer that the
Democratic State Convention at Syracuse
had a wild time of it on the second day Of
its meeting. The Tammany Delegaltss
were what gave the key-note to the big
stir in the Convention. But the Conven-•
tion has closed, and probably the political
wind has abated its fierceness by this
time. Possibly there may be a calm on
the Democratic side, "0

Wife writes. me that some of my neigh

you know Mr., DEAN? Did you ever pnt ,
up with him at South Creek?" In reply,
I would, say that, I did stop with Mr. PE
TER DEAN over night while engaged in
my colporteur work. I was treated with
no little kindness by I urn and his genial
household. He has over two hundred
trond acres, and evidently manages his
affairs with discretion. My stop:with him
reminds me of my call on the Democrittic
nominee for Sheriff three years ago soon
after the election. 'I reached his house
near noon—l wanted my - horse fed and
dinner for myself, and I got all without
asking, only by introducing myself. I
was invited "to eat and might_ have ate
more, only I would not. cat more than I
wanted to please any body. There is this
difference bettipeii the two—that Demo
cratic nominee was really sore--he did
not intend for me to, see things - that
light, bet I could not wefl help it ; but
my good friend PETER was not sore.
However he did appear to be resting: un
der a kind of premonition of an election
to the hflice of Sheriff for Bradford COUD-'
ty.- Ile seemed to have a degree of fore
boding of responsibility of his new posi
tion would bring upon him. My call was
nearly two years Since ; and• I doubt not.
but the Ida that•he was doomed to be the
next Sheriff, has been an a.ffiictige weight,'
upon hini since time.
At my visit morning came, and ' break=
fast all right, after which I proposed fam
ily worship. The' 'Bible 'was readily
brought forward—then came reading of
- Scripture and prayer: I knelt and pray.
ed. But.now my friend, PETER is pray-
ing, with this difference In his case. thathe
"stands praying to be seen of men.". Nor
is be at fault here for thtfreason that he
is not praying for mercy from the Lord
so much as for the votes of the ,people.
In asking for mercy no doubt but he
would kimel, but while'Prayieg for'votes
from the goad people of Bradford' be'
"Oa ads to be seen of gent." . All right,
friend Pam, I 'admire your connige ;
stand erect and face the music,. and hav
ing done all continue to stand. My iiii
pression is that Mr. DEAN will be elected.
Who knows but fate has predetermined
this thing? Give him votes enough and
his 'election is Mire. Statte may think it
'somewhat against Mr. Daatt, heriuse. of,
1 his reilidence so near Te::nyville. True,
the name of the place is mall, and yet a
small soanding mune need not effect ano.
