talked about the good old times. Ev

past. The Adrian Times tells of these .

ing about the present price of wheai.

little of his experience •the good
old times of forty yeras ago. Ile liv
ed where Burr Oak now stands, and,
wanting to get Some barrels of salt,
he put thirty bushels of wheat in his
wagon and started for Adrian, eighty
miles away. As he' could not get
cash there, lie went . on to Palmyra
mills-Land sold his wheat' for filly
cents :a bushel. Going batik to Ad
rian, he paid $3 for two barrels of
salt, and got back to Burr Oaks after
being five days gone, being - delayed
by the execrable roads: This is a
fait SatriPle 'of the good old times,
and it must be admitted that they
do not flatter themselves by compari
son with the times we have at pres
ent.

We give this warning to the people

this contemptible movement when it
appears. The intention evidently is
to make some personal attack so
late in the campaign that no answer
can reach the people until after etec

told and so often refuted that

The secretary of ; the_ Treasury has
been beset with inqdiry, and, finding .
It impossible to reply in detail to all
inquirers, has had photographs made
of the compound interest notes and of
the 740 bonds in-order to show - the
difference between the two. The lat
ter never- circulated as currency and
-never Were a legal tender. 'the larg
est amount of legal tenders, fraction
al currency and national hank notes
in circulation at the end of any fiiscal
year was $781,41;0,917.17 on the 30th
of-June, •187.1. The panic of 1873
came on' during the pe.tiod of Ma
•tion. Since that time there has been
-a contraction of paper money equal
to ninety-two millions of &Wars.
On the .other hand, there has been
more than an equivalent increase of
col'n in the hands of the Government,
.and the purchasing power of the pa-

creased that it is almost or quite
eqnivalent in exchangable • value to
the greater volume, in circulation in .

posed its issue, denounced it through

the greenbackt" Ile made a fight
against the men who are trying to

we hope yet to see every Republican
follow his banner.

mick. of Wayne county, for Con

are, we believe, with a single other

expected of DeMocratic papers, and
this is an ancouraging sign. It is an
evidence that'there is a degree of dd

readers cannot drag their party press.
It is true that the editors of the
INDintrose Democrat and the Brad
ford. -Argus were candidates before
the conference that nominated Dim
miek, but we do not believe that it is
pigee caused by disappointment
which alone prompts their refusal to
support the successful candidate.

denyes, and we cheerfully give his
denial the same circulation the charge

FROM 1863 to 1868 there was a
rapid contraction
.; of the currency.
These were five years of great busi
ness prosperity. Erom 1869 to 1873
was ti season of Inflation. During
these five years was the period of
shrinkage and final collapse,. Those
who are - fond of drawing inferences
will please draw.
