ItrAN, Editor. • INSTITUTE TEACHERS• Institute managers should remember that an institute lecturer, teacher, and talker, are not ,the same Ibing.- A man 'assay, be apleasant lecturertor an abund :nit talker, 'and . be no true teacher at all. , Art a proper, Working, teachers'. insti-' tut° requires; ahem all things, good teach ing:: And to teach well in an institute one should, first of all, have been a sue aloft,/ teacher, It is contrary to the very natureof the urt, that }re who has failed in the school as the less should, succeedln the institute which is the greater... The PrineipleiWglit be more strongly put : he who has not attained an, eminent success in practical teaching ; gives little promise of anything but failure in institute work. In the next place, to :be properly fitted for that work, the teacher must have learned how to adapt his skilled teaching to the express . wants of an institute,—we say emphatically, to adapt his own alrea-• dy - mastered art of teaching to the new conditions ; for it is not enough to have la boriously compiled, and crammed, for the • purposo,of tabulation and talk. You may cull from Page, and Northend,. and Hol brook, and. Holbrook, and Russell, and Wickersham, and pirate from your asso ciates and assistants - , and have tested lit tle Yourself, and be no-,teachesT j yourself. We have witnessed interminable black board tabulations, and listened to -valua ble deliverances of mere dogmatism there on, in which there was neither ',break nor line of tree institute teaching. accu mulatiort of numbered empirical" musts and " shoulds," and "oughts," can com pare in sense or value with a few clear; 'self-tested, illustrative- harm But •agaid we insist, that these, hotel;—otherwise_ called "pt.tical " methods,—Must_have had their first and last beginning in sue,' cessful teaching. Without that, there is no security that the institute instruction, t-o called, will not be overloaded with em pirical fancies and theoretic details; which the instructor 'himself could not work out successfully in the school-room, and which his auditors neither could use ; nor would &min of using, after the close of the ses sion. But them-is : l;m greater, evil;: in in stitute institute instruction than that of elaborately displaYing and dogmatically enforcing the untried and impracticable'. It kills the very interest, 'purpose, and - ex, pectation which it -is a chief object to arouse. 4 Yet, this is the very evil which must increase and prevail-just in propor tion asthe *theory of teaching is made a study, and its presentation attempted by unpracticed dr half-successful teachers. We press these principles earnestly up o'our educational authorities, for the in stitute work is growing in importance, and jus ‘ t in proportion as it becomes prom inent, it is likely to be infested by mere platform aspirants and scholastic charla tans, than Which notting is to be so pro foundly deprecated, It is bad enough to have so much ernde capacity- and ineom petetnt ;raining among teacbefs - ;. but to crown this, by enthroning the samei de lects on a larger scale on our . institute ptatform, 'is the "last infirmity of evil." - 7 1 2,'or , England JoUi•ilat of Education. • • ITHE BLIND SPDT IN THE EYE. ' The Abbe Marhitte discovered the sing lar fact that when a ray of light falls rip on, an be conceived, the center of the op tic nerve it excites no sensation. The ex periment of MriOtte can be readily re peated on , the following representations of the' sign 4- and capital 0 : • • • 0 tx - perinic - nt of `A ariot to if we close the left eye and direct the axis of the right eye steadily toward the `when the paper is held at the distance of about ten inches from.the eye, , the 0 vanishes. The distance; from the eye to the object disappears, must be about live times as great as its distance, from the other object: In this ease the and 0 are two inches , asunder. Now, as the optic nerve enters the. eye, not in exact eoiticidence with the axis, but .a lit tle to, the nasal side, it is evident that; rays of light from an object can never fall at the same time upon the insensible point of each ever The defect of vision is then fore never experienced under ordinary cir etulastances, If rays fall upon the blind - spot of one, leye; other rays froM the same object willinilpinge upon the outer side of the retina in the other eye, and at a (Hs: it ance from the other blind spot. Now, there can he no doubt that the• blind spot has a real existence, lnd .the question arises as to what it 'really is. It was at first decided that this spot was the basis of the, optic nerve,: and that,' therefore,' the nerve itielf was incapable of distinct vision. This opinion is in fact embraced: without examination, in many books of optics at the present day. , Bui, by granting that the r4S fall at Lhe , base, of the optic nerve, it by no means demonstrates that the nerre is in capable of receiving-the impression. The 'central artery of the retina 'penetrates the eye through the very center of the nerve : and through the same opening the central vein leaves the organ. It is probable, therefore, that in this experiment the ray falls, upt.ti the blood-vessels and not upon the Medullary natter of the'nerve ; and if . so, we could not expect that there should be sensation. W e think this to be the correct - expl anation of the phenomenon. Will, some of our readers give us another and better one? N. SELF CULTURE To ensotV-succesS in almost every voca tion, self culture must be persistently practiced. In lie other procession is this so essential is in that of teaching. ' The . most scholarly and successful teachers are invariably the most studious ones. Some portion of each day should be devoted to study. Teachers.haie no excuse for he ing deficient in orthography, geography, history, and the definitions, principles ana rules of grammar and arithmetic for they min be acquired without an instruc tor by patient application of the memory. . -Each successive eXamination of a teach er on comparison with preceding ones should show marked improvement in Scholarship. and the " Superintendent - should develop and preserve all data poss ible to aid in determining progressiveness. Ait examination , for 'winter schools should extend over most of tbi" - contents ' oreach book of common school - i3tudies. A teacher isTeertainly unqualified to take pupils through the practical or higher arithtneties who is unable to solve the problems and explain the rules in ;these books. We should favor selecting most of the problems for examination from these hooks—changing names and figures. The i- Superintendent could net then be juittr seem* of tap match. sernrity,.;—cd, etymology and syntax, the notes and ob servations of our s grammar, than on some intricate selection of classic English. Teaphers should strive during the sum mer to thoroughly review the common brunches, and stady how to explain and teach the several topics, thus qualifying for winter schools. Teachers, should , prepare to earn as much as possible, and directors should pay all they earn. Examinations that are partly oral and partly written 'aie fairest for teachers, as they enxible persons deficient by one metb 7 od to receive due credit by the othr. They are far more satisfactory to the Superintendent. — The teacher's knowl edge of books may be quite fairly tested by the written method, but the ability and tact to explain, to illustrate, to teach, to govern; can only be determined by oral work. Another advantage of oral examina tions is that directors and friends select ing teachers by noticing the manner, the readiness and the'tact• of each, may be materially assisted fin the choice. There is less chance to -favcir friends and punish enemies. We'hope to see :the combined method tried. The argunient in favor of exclu sively written work, is that it is so much shorter and easierfor the examiner. The examinations should be so Emmet , . ous that each class will not exceed ten to twenty teachers. We hear ; that, Superintendent Wilt is busily engaged in visiting schools in dif ferent parts of our County. lie has made ninny friends since entering tipOrt the du ties of SuperintendeuLand has given gen eral satisfaction. Few pertons are as well qualified .for the important work of school visitation. We hope tjiat his Suggestion to teach 7 ers to - make up loads and attend the Teachers' Association in Towanda, June 1:Ith and.l4o, may meet with a generous response ; for we believe the session will be - one of unusual interest. Mu. Enerent :—As none have - given my favorite solution to the equal annual in stallment problem, I offer the following : suppose the yearly payment to be one dollar. The payment four years from ffaie will cancel - a debt 4. 80.0434 three years from date. This is found by divid ing the fourth payment, one dollar, by one _plus the rate of interest (1.00).• Add this result to the payment of three years from date, and we have the value of third and-fourth payments,' three years from date, which is i 4 .1,0434. Dividing titles by 1.00 and adding (81.00), the second pay ment, .and we hare $2,833.4,-the united .valueli - Of.second, third and ,fOurth pay ments two years from date. Dividing this by 1.00 and adding the first payment will give us $3,0730, the value of all the payments one year.froin date. The pres ent worth of this sum •ill be found by di viding again by 1.00 to be $3,4'651. Then 'four annual payments-of one dollar each will cancel a present debt of $3,4651. ;To cancel a debt of $4500.Y3 the yearly pay, went must be as inany timen One dollar as 3.4651 is contained times in 4500,, which is 81298.67, answer. • .1.
