celebrated its eighth anniversary, May 80,
1817. Rev. P. R. toWER-delivered the
annual address, 'involving -the doctrine
that " drunkenn*is "lx disease," and
.that doctors who prescribe alcoholic stim
ulants as a medicine, do more than any
class of mon-to spread it; also s that stati
tics will prove that about '7 . 0 per cent.,bf
such doctors fall victims to \ it. \\ The ad
dress was an able one and cannot fail to
benefit the large audience that was pres
int. Rev. J. S. Lams earnestly invited
those present, who wore not menibere„to
sign the pledge; and a nitmber responded.
The Secretary's 'report gave an exhibit •
of the progress of\ the work of the Soclety,
stating that all the debts of the desoCia
thm were paid, and that as never before
the attention of leading temperance men
was directed to the examination of the
