We published_ in the ednciitional 047,

our Legislature in regard to the matter of
text books, also the proposed action of
the Legbilatnre of York • in regard to
the same subject. We are not ourselves -
in favor-of:the State dciing What can bet
ter be done by private enterprise, nor do
we think the canscvof education wM be
advanced by the State talizingi:this matter
in hand, and th t uismothering all effort to
improve eur text-booke by new methods
of teaching and mom syritetriatic arrange

the agitation of this matter would be of
profit to the public, nor are we disap
pointed, We have . before us lists of
prices of two of our leading publishing
- houses, Nilsen, Blakeman,- Taylor & Co.
and Harper i & Brothers, which have been
sent to US recently, and which !contain
present prices of school books.published
by these houses. We notice a redUction
on the retail price of from 15 to / 20 per
cent., and in some cases still more.' For .
instance, Sander's Fifth Reader fbrmerly
sold (Or $1.50; the present retail price is
$1.30. Robinson's Higher Arithmetic
formerly sold for $1.40; now for $1.20,
etc. The reduction made by MEP= <to
BROS. is still-larger, in -many cases being
from 25 to 331- per cent. Other...publish

We have also received froni Scribner,

Tit?. task before us in this country, in
order to make; education universal, is a
herculean ouq. ; It must be performed,
the issue involVes the very life:of free in
stitutions; but to accomplish the work
will require the organization and applica
tion of all tho fOrces,.religious,. moral, in
tellectual, political, that can be brought
to vicar upon it. They neither appreciate
the evil nor fudgewell of ,the remedy for
it, who think that themere-petwage of a
Jaw inflicting a fine or imprisonment up
on parents who.do not send their children
to school, will effect its cure. At the very
best such a law could cut away only the
outer portion of the - cancer, while Welts
roots liUuld remain untouche4.
. ACK2Sq;)WLEDOMENTS. -- Two or , three
weeks since we received solutions fibm
Sheshequin and Standing Stone, to prob
lems published in the educational column.
We regret that they have been mislaid,
and on that account have not been_ pub
lished. We regret it the more because
to several of the problems no solutions
have yet been published.. We cannot
even now recall the naives of those who
sent us the solution. If the parties re
ferred to will kindly duplicate their-solu
tions and send them to us, wo will try
and see that they appear in an early issue
of the Educational-. Department.. Each
problem should be written in " full at the
head of the solution.
