More than twenti-tlve years ago the , Institute was founded, and for most of the time since has been in suc cessful operation. There are scores of young men filling responsible positions in different parts of the country, whO receiv ed their training inside the walls of that riot altogether prepossessing appearing building. At the present time the school is doing sn excellent work, and every year students are prepared for entering advanced classes at College. • Then our Graded School has within the past few years become an institution of which every citizen may feel justly proud. On the erection of the new building four -Years ago a now interest was manifested in the school, and the number of pupils at once increased from about 225 to nearly five hundred:: The progress made by the scholars and the care tskei by the Princi pal arilltilis assistants, meet with _the hearty approval of the • directors and' pa rents.' The Ohba school has come to be patronized by the rich as well as the poor, and is looked upon by-all as an institu tion which is second to DO other portance and value to our community. - Other school bave been opened frord time to time, and have all accomplished a gofxl purpose. One of the latest of these is Mrs. - GIBSON'S school for young ladies and girls, established last year on Huston 'Street. So successful has the school prov en,: that Mrs. G. is compelled to refuse many applicants for want of room. Mrs. G. has for a number_ of years enjoyed the enviable reputation of being one of the most accomplished and successful teachers in the county, The - experience Of those who "have patronized her here during the past year, has fully sustain -d the fame which she bad acquired in other iilaces. We think she would be doing only simple justice 'to her ability as an iibstructbr, and the de mands of those who have children requiring such a school, to. secure more commodious rooms, so that a larger number might be. enabled to .profit by coming under her instruction. STEADMAN, Is the Chief Engineer of the Penna. and New York, and Geneva, Ithaca and Sayre Railrpads. The Engineere.rooms in the general office at Sayre having been made ready for occupation, on Saturday last Mir. STEADMAN transferred his office from Wilkes-Barre to the City or the Plains. "STEADY," as be is familiarly called; on account of his square proportions, and general relial.ility, is a great favorite along the road, ana the arrival of the train with his " traps " and his valuable person was made the occasion of a great ovation. A large number of the officials of the Pa. it N. Y., G. I. S S., and 'Southern Oentral Railroads, headed by their Superintendents, were drawn up in line to receive him. The celebrated The odore Thomas-Batt Orchestra discoursed its most. inspiring Wag-ner music, and fresh laurels were won by one wado bears worthily., the name co: the great master HAYDEN. Ban Svonv.—Tbe Wilkes-Barra Leader gives this sad history of a woman who re• centiy died in That city : " On Tuesday the life of a once lovely woman , went out under circumstances peculiarly sad and sorrowful. A few years ago Dr. Cass was a practicing phy sician in Duahore. 11e then had a hand some wife and four children. Time pass: ed and the Doctor died, leaving hie wid ow and little ones to mourn his loss. How or tumid what circumstances, Mrs. CASK was induced to come to . this City is not known, but hither she came some time ago,..and for many months past has lived in Hillard's block. Poverty overtook her, and she was forced to earn her own liv ing. She advertised herself as a nurse, and those who have had her services at test to the earnest .performance of her du ties. "Recently the woman was taken sud denly ill, and Dr. Ptours was called to her bedside. It was discovered that she was suffering from a miscarriage caused by overwoak. Then the question was raised as to how sbe came to t place her self in a condition to_ meet so sorry an Issue. The woms.n'ilips were for a time sealed,'but just before she died she told to Dr. Prorrs and Alderman PARSONS 'a pitiful story of her wrolfp. It appears that a man from . the vicinity of Dallas, who is well known for intrigues of a vile nature, in some way met her, and In time speculated on her pinetiy, and forced ber to a compliance with his brutal demands. Of course it was done under. the guise of protection, and the poor woman having teken the first step, could not afterwards recall it. Lately she has grown weaker. The man who ruined .her, of course de serted her in her extremity, and to-day she is a corpse. We tell the story briefly and without exaggeration. It forms an other chapter in that mysterious volume which time and experience are ever writ ing." A CORRPSI'ONDENT of the Athens Ga zette gives the following particulars of a fire at Green's Landing, on Wednesday mornirig"of last week : "This morning as we were in the act of taking our last _snooze before begin ning the labors of the day, a sudden cry brought us to our . feet and our senses. Upon looking out we saw FRANK Lis coi.N running and heard the continued shouts—" Fire ! tire ! lire !" Looking to- wadi the store we saw the black smoke issuing from the windows and doors in dense volumes. Making a hasty toilet and securing a couple of pails, we lost no dime in reaching the scene of disaster, where we found Mr. IRVINE LINCOLN, Mr. J. A, WELLER, Mr. F. E. EDITOR BBADFORD REPORTER : Recog nizing the fact that your esteemed paper reaches the eyes of more Republicans than any other one in the county, we wish if you can permit us the favor to say a little in reference to the approaching choice of a candidate for District Attor ney..,This and a County Surveyor being the only offices to be filled this year iu our county, it has been determined to make one job of them and also of the electing delegates to the coming State Convention. With reference to the different candi dates named for this office, We may' say that it may be reckoned a matter of satis -faction that the Republican party em brAces'in its membership such a repro sentation of the best character and talent of the country, - so that frequently where a nuqjber of candidates are presented, nothiik can be said in disparagement of any. , We concede it to be so in this cue. The particular candidate with whom we have been favorably impressed, and whom we candidly believe it is the inter est of the Republican party, of the people in general, and of public justice, to have in the position, is 1. McPherson, Esq., of Towanda: . It is a well-understood matter that the duties of the District Attorney are to maintain the peace and dignity of the Commonwealth, and to discourage . and repress crime by a vigorous' prosecution of offenders. From this circumstance an attorney of some experience in coirducting criminal cases is especially desirable as an incum bent of the office of DiStrict Attorney. That Mr. McPherson is thus specially qualified, was proven to the satisfaction of the Cour., the bar, the jury,, and the spectator!, iu two different murder trials upon which he has been engaged, and in each of which tlie ultimate finding of the law and the facti was iu accordance with his argument. • - Mr. McPherson is in every sense of the word - a self-made man. His early life was passed upon one of Bradford county's hilly farms in the township of Herrick. Virbile quite young be was qualified to teach; subsequently he attended the Sus qnehanpa Collegiate Institute at Towan da, and finished his course at Lafayette College, defraying all, or nearly all, the expense from the savings of his own labor and economy. His high grade of scholar ship, taken notice of by the professors at Easton, was a necessary result of natural talent and persevering hard work, com bined and laid the boat foundation for his subsequent success at the bar. He has been practicing in our court five years, ,'the result of which boa placed- him among_ the first 'Allis profession. He has taken an active and prominent part in all the, political cont es ts during that period, and' nas distinguished himself by his' discus sion of national issues, as well as of local and State issues. Three years ago his - friends were much disposed to place him upon the County ticket for District Attorney, but Mr. Mc- Pherson dctlined in favor of the present worthy and gentlimanly incumbent. We trust his many friends will take pains to attend the pritherymeetings and choose delegates favorable tkiihis nomination." * lt * To, Tl4 l dpril 8, 11377, 12111 Tan sociable of the Presb7terial Church, held at the home of.
