'The` party waribea' ari*of.to's
'club -house, .the appearance of which
seemed familiar to the prisoner, and not
at all like a Mayor's office. fILLTAICIII
suspicions were then aroused, and, in
turning suddenly around, noticed his
brother CIIARLEY in the back-ground,
and, as the latter could no longer refrain
from laughing beadily, the entire plot
was exposed, and, amid the loud guffaws
of the entire party, ' meekly said,
Well, CUARLEY, you're one ahead of
me,' and made a bolt for the nearest res
taurant to finish his meal." •
WE ARE deeply pained to learn of tho
death of our valued friend, ALEXANDER
ALLEN, of Pawling, N. Y. Mr.- A. was
here only a few weeks since, and was ap
parently in the enjoyment of vigorous
physical and mental faculties: • Ills ro
bust constitution, however, _proved of no
avail a g ainst the burning fever which
at
tackedhim, and he passed away after a
brief illness. Mr. A. had many friends
in this county, and , was one of those
whole-soided, genial men who always at
tract their fellows to them. His home
was always a bright spot, not only to his
immediate family, but to a large circle_ of
acquaintances. Every one who visited
him,was made welcome and happy. Al
thoUgh he was the possessor for years of
an ample competency, he was an exceed
ingly industrious man, frugal,, but not
parsimonious. The worthy poor and the
unfortunate - always found in him a gener
ous friend. l'e will be mourned and
missed by the community if; which he
had so long lived. -To his estimable and
devoted wife, and loving and cherished
daughter, his sudden death seems almost
insufferable; but they remember his irre
proachable Christian life, unswerving
faith in a crucified Redeemer, and there
fire mourn not as those who have no
hope. With the Ps:amidst, they feel that
although he cannot return to them, they
shall meet him in that world where no
partings ever occur.
