ONE of the most festal occasions of the
season,.was the entertainment given by
Mr. and Mrs. PAtKER, at their handsome
residence at Sayre, on Friday evening,. to
a !sleighing party composed of friends
from Towanda. The Colonel fairly out

WARREN CENTRE.—We report an aver

financially, although the Sheriff was

Our four charches. including the North

of life in an acceptable manner. The
meetings are well Attended.

l'he course of he TIMES during the Presidential
campaign has secured for its hosts of new friends,
and has placed beyond controversy its
_position as
the foremost Republican journal its the_United
States. During the Wince! struggle prceding
the election the fellness, accuracy, and fairness of
itkriews repot ts were as obvious as its vigor and
breadth of view as atiorgan of public opinion. The
critical situation In Which the country is placed:by
thee disputed result of the eleetbm, has been
promptly recognized ,by the: Trwcs, but it _has
found DO reason to modify the claim which it urged,
alone among Its cotemporaries, that the vote of the.
:titter November secured a majority of Electoral
votes for Hayes and Wutteler. Readers of. the
THIES on the day following the • election were
planed in pietsession of returns which were simply
the tpost complete and - trustwortny published in
any part of the Union. The more thoroughly the
facts of the election are disentangled front the mass
of Democratic falsehood and pretense which has
been thrown around them, the more clearly Is the
justice revealed of the claims made by the Ttattsi
the morning after election.
' Now that the election of Hayes and Wheeler is
perceived by Impartial observers of, both parties to
tw a certainty, the TImES recognizes the fresh re
sponsibilities, which this renewal of a great public.
trust imposes upon the Republican l'arty._ The
TiNEs was among tile foremost defenders of the
principles of purification and reform within the,
party which triumphed In the nominatlen of Ruth
erford It. Hayes at Cincinnati. It will be-as prom- .
leent and as uneompromising In Its demand for the
embodiment of those principles in administrative
and legislative action. The election has given rise
to constitutional controversies, these discussion
may last for Months to come, and whoseaettletnent
may tax all the good sense, forbearance, and law:-
abiding tnsrtnets of the people at large. It will he
our constant endeavt r to correct excited feeling by'
