A superintendent of, schools said at a
merit teachers' meeting, that most of the
geography studied by • pupils prior to the
agn of
,15,sin thti majority of, schools; is
not remembered, and!advised economizing
by devoting this time to othim branches;
„Doubtless from gross examples of imper 7
fection, he has' ove r : ' estimated the evil;
for ths majority of persons have obtained
a fair knowledge of geography before thO
age of 15. . , ' I
truquestiOnably t.here is much worth

whichresult. the eliil. Let, reform be ac 7,
complished by insisting on haiing better
teaching from better books, rather than
by attempting an unnatural and- unsym: ,
metaical educational development,
Teachers agree that' the philosophy of
education demands simultaneous study of
' latiguage, mathematics and science.
In common schools, reading, , writing,
speaking, spelling and grammar, develop

building with one wall omitted, as a prop

tier of these- dclartments, and we urge
parents and youth not to injure the mind
iguorli.g either, however strong the
inclination.
Taste, facility of acquiiition, or imagiL
nary utility often induce pupils, with con
. Seut.of thoughtless or ignorant parents,
to "just study 'r;thmetic," and as the
.Study is easy; and requires little effort,
little disciplide is gained, and :the time is
. largely waste. '
As the um,cleS are best strengthened

by that sttidy which requires the greatest

pupils and parents to correct this one-si.
ded system. •
Let our teachers learn from books, oth
er teachers, or sOme source, just what to
teach, when to teach it, and'how to teach
it. -
As a result of one-sidedness in schdol
days most iustinctors are "riding bob:

arithtuetiC and grammar . well and all the
time, and constantly neglect certain
branches:"

as that such teachers will do honest, im;
partial, successful work.
In uine-tenths schools, penmanship
has no allotted time, or, at most, perhaps
five or ten minutes daily, because of dis' 7
(inalification or dislike on the part of,teicli
ers, , While perhaps arithmetic tray have

boys are generally serawleils with the-pen,
while often expert in.othetrbranches. •
These hints arc advanced that -teacherS

-A person should becOthe froth self
ttire, student life, or experience, qualified
to instruct- equally well iu any required
branch, and have a fair order 'of daily
ercises, and then closely adhere to it, and
as before mentioned induce pupils tosthdy

Many teachers- require the contents of
the book, almost Word - for word, .from pu

PADDLZ YOUR OWN CANOE.--Judge S.
gave his son a thousand dollars, telling
him to go tä college and graduate. The
son returned at the end of the Freshman
year, without a dollar, and with several
ugly habits. About the close of the va
cation, the Judge said:
" Well, William, are you going to 'col
lege this year? "
" Have no money, father."
"But I gave you a thousand dollars to
graduate on."
"It's all gone, father.", I,
"'Very well, my son, it was all I Could
give you; 'you can't stay here; you must
now pay your own way in the world."
• A new light broke in on the vision of
the astonished ayoung man. He !accom
modated biniself to the situation, left
home, made his way to college; graduated
at the head of his class, studied law, be
came Governor of the State of New York,
entered the Cabinet of the United States,
and has made a record for himself that
will not soon die—being none other than
the late Wm. H. Seward.
TUE compensation of teachers in the
ungraded public schools of Texas is fixed
at the rate of ten cents a day for each
pupil in actual attendance on the day
computed for. The teacher's compensa
tion is likely to vary from day to day, but
there is presented to him a strong Motive
for inducing a largo attendance of pupils.
It might be well to bring some pecuniary,,
consideration to bear upon parents, also 4
It is stated that a certain parent lately
sent thirty-two written "excuses" for ab.
scum during a term of twelve weeks, or
si.rty school days.
THE editor of the' Now York a
Bulletin, an old and'%successful teacher,
says that he listened to the best recitation
in algebra ho ever remembers to have
heard, white recently visiting the Athens
Graded Sehool. This is a high testimoni
al to Prof. Crawford's skill as an instrue:
tor, and it is to be tegretted that our
county is to be deprived of his skill and
experience.
