II II E iley;whnent Advise to Yitmg Farmers. A correspondent, giving advice to :. yming.farmers sayS : It is not always safe to peactice the same, system upOn one farm- that is practiCed upon another, :where the two are adjoin.' ine; much depends upon situation as well as soil. I have observed that :very fair 'Crops of corn have been grown a number of years in succes sion one the 'same- land without the aid of a 'fertilizer; while on other land nearly and apparently as g9O d,. but having a different location, when farmed in corn) three or four years in stiecession, the last crops were a lit [tie better than nubbins. When crops 41, - e rotated, they are much more pro-, .iductive than -when the same article is grown fora .number of years in succession, and the laid is kept in . better heart. Therefor adopt some. good' syiltem Of rotation. Plow deep `and.well‘ always !getting your crop ; in the ground in . good,, season, and harvesting, it at the proper time. Early punting of crops is generally ' the best.. Never attempt to do more than can be done well. Look close ly after the . manure pile—there is nothing.-of-more importance to the farm. Contract no debts unlesS it is for, 'teal estate or-judiciously improv- what you already own. ,Be dustrious, practiCe economy, and sell your - crops whenever they are ready • for Market. Take a good agricultu ral paper, one that keeps you posted in what is" going on in your line of business specially • the Markets. Spend your ercuiugs at, home, read; • ing yOur palm; and keeping accurate accounts of the manageinent of the farm. if you are blessed with good health, and these rules are observed, • you will filid farming honorable, easy, and profitable. - , — LIME AS A FERTILIZER.—It is a great- mistake to apply common caus tic lime to land with the expectation -tfat it will lanswer or act us a fertil izer.- , While it is true that lime is found in the ashes! of plants, it is also truOthat its Main value cOnsist's-in . ! its Mechanical action in hastening : the decomposition of plant food al ready in the soil i It acts as a solvent, - and has also the effeci, ..of loosening -the soil, and making the stiff clay, friable. A !man may improve the quality of some kinds of soil by plying lime, but can never make one 'that is poor rich. by its use. The old couplet current in England, which runs as follows: lie who limes withoat manure - - Will leave his farm and family pow, furnishes the true key to the value, and use of lime on ordinary soils. Lime must •be considered its a me j elianical manure, and applied accord 4. ingly. If the soil is full of Vegetable matter, lime will hasten its decompoi sition, , ind- thereby, increase its ter; tility, for. the time, but not perma 7 nently. Lime will usually improve • told, wet soils,. clays and sand, pio . ! Tided the latter contains some vege, f table matter requiring decomposition; • and light applicationsay eight bush= els'of fresh lime, or twenty to twentY r itive of air-Slacked or gas lime, are nreferable 'to larger applications at •, one time. ;. MANI'REs, IMPItoVED ItY BLENDING. ;--Prof. _Geo: - Cook intbrms us that a ton of Itarn-vard manure is worth $5.77, and tiffs_ estimate is based on thrL.e • principal elements. • Other writers hay,e informed us precisely a top of manure - is worth, . 11'0111C:1dt ililleynt kind , uffeed. But thes_c calculations are putely at, and althow - 01 couyeilkmt, .gititieS, are not t0.1,e ri lie i on as a true luertif-. ure of acrricultural values. It 114 true that nitrogen, potash and phosphoric ai!id 'fire the elements soone4 ei lupig;nd in_ cultivated lands. and it well for the farmers that vast store housjs of these fertilizers are found in guano beds, in phosphatic roej and in:potash salts in Germany. 1 :4;4 the true mode of . using theSe lertili2ers is beyond any doubt, to employ them as a supplement to•barn= Ward manure. Use all the htter yon can:ol)taiii, and then, with(Lscriminate judgMent, add chemical fertilizers. There is no doubt about animal dung being always adapted to increase the :erop . and improve ' l 4c soil. It is to lohints what bread tsto man, the staff pt life', but as man thrives best on , a - variety .af• food, so all the crops of 'the garden arc benefited by the ap- Hication - ofchemical manures. PENNSTISANIA SYSTEM OF ROTA;• TioN.--A 'correspondent, of the Fait- Rome - F low - nal says :1 Our rotn ' tion - of crops, is perhaps, different to • that-of the west and south. Our vs . tem of rotation !is ara follows :.We put liMe on'the sol. field, turn doWn for corn next:year, cover with a rat ted stable manure, and turn again for ' corn ;j then two crops of wheat. The - second time we - sow wheat' we also sow clover and timothy ; then mow or pasture one year; then we begin to turn for corn again. So, we come round to grass• every - four or five years. WlLditor, element week. voon Num IH OUR 00XION SCHOOL& The question of adding the branch Viteal Music to those: lready on the teaeb or's-Certificate, has :been agitated in anr State. Several years ago an act. With provisions that teachers should be exam ined in that branch, was introduced: in the Legislature of this State, but it never became a law. We' believe it would have been a WiEC enactment. Vocal music is taught in all our cities, and, in nearly' all the larger towns of the State. We have 'not heard of it being abandoned in any place, after trial, as not accomplishing the result which was contemplated by its l adV` 4zicates. The benefit and practical ittil ity has been established beyond doubt in our cities. Can it he plactitally taught in intr emn mou Schools in the rural districts? We say yes. • Music is just as eleiating and refining in the 'country as in the city. Vo cal music in a school in the country has, the same effect—to harmonize the' feel- • ings and sympathies—to give culture . and discipline—as it baS in the city. 3lany of the teachers iu our county. are opposed to- it for, no ether reasou than that they are not prepared to teach This is a selfish opposition and upt Such an objection 36 7011,1 d be ntdde by any one, who has at heart the cause in which he or she may be laboring. The teacher that- is. interested in his • Wory, will ittudy and prepare himself so to be able tai teach and instruct his pu- ails in the studies which he knows are for their benefit. If adopting vocal music as a branch of study in our schools will rid the community of a class of teachers who are willing to do only what the laWeorn pels them to, :dui do that under a protest, the sooner it is adopted the . better for the community; and the children of Bradford county. . It is said of the Germans that 'they are a nation of singers," and why °. cause vocal music i 3 taught the same as reading and writing; it requires f a knowl edge of music as well as orthograplin'on the part of , the pupil to be advanced from ono grade to the next higher.: If they teach music in other pl;ces with success and profit, why can it not, and why should it not, be taught_in our-com mon schools? Why not? Some future time we will give some practical methods of teaching this bratieh and ask thOse who have had experience to give us their Method, ::nir the.
