Tlf E SECOND entaring
upim the second century of American In
dependence, itis proper to take a look at
our own immediate vicinity, and note the
growth, especially of Towanda. A hun
dred years ago' BradfOrd county was al
most, an unbroken wilderness, and per
haps th e fuot cif no white man had ever
pressed the soil on which our embryo city
now stands.„ Could ltunoLvu Foy and
his emnpanionii, who first settled here, be
permitted to revisit the scenes of . their
early toils Muir struggles, look upon the
fertile valleysi , and blooming bill-sides,
which surround us, and witness the beau
tiful residences, large and -commodious
business' houses, elegant churches, large
Hotels, andextensive mannfactories.which
have sprung up within the last century,
we.have -no doubt thcy would exclaim
with, one of odd, " now lettest thou thy
servant tiepartin peace;"
Fifty years ago Towanda was but a ham
let in--he woods, to-day we are one of the
most prosperous busy towns in the State.
Every branch , of iiulustiy is prosecuted
with more tibti ordinary zeal and enter
.prisc, while niermuCle pursuits rind abun
dant and remunerative scope.
Speaking of . manufactories,. we were
most agreeably surprised last week on vitt- ,
iting the establishment of J. 0. FROST &
SONS, to witness the magnitude of theW
badness. Starting out a few years since;
with one building and renting power, they
now occupy several very large buildings,
which, with their lumber, cover several
acres of ground. They do not confine
themselves td` the manufacture of furni
title from prepared timber': but take the
material in the log, and be - fore it leaves
the yard present it ni,lt beautiful bini-rtxim
set, an easy.' chair, extension table, or
some other toeful article. From twenty
seventy-tive men arc employe the year
round, while 'the lumber cousunied puts
thonOinds of dollars into the pockets of
the thrifty, economical land-owners who
harp preserved a portion of their timber.
Thlk-lienefit. which the general publierle-
Jives front, their ez-tahlis%lnent, is, not ir
considerable,.,inasmuch as the firm sell
goods of OW own manufacture at great
ly Eeductd p~ ices. We were shown solid

Order from a rope manufactory in Phila
delphia, for a large number of " keels."
Thus the good name of the establishment
contributes toward spreading the fame of
our town. It is only just an this connec
tion to stare that - The. -goods sent witty
Messrs. FROST & SORB, 14 alike creditable
to the manufactory arid the business
community in which it , is located. We
have said then much in regard to this as
tablisluncut for the reason that we do net
believe any considerable number of oar
people have any conception of
tude and importance. Its machinery has
been kept in motion all through the hard
times, and eternity alone will disclose to
what extent the enterprising thin have
been instrumental in ' keeping the wolf
froin the door" of many worthy and in-;
dustrious mechanics.
To the practical skill, clear foresight,
indomitable perseverence and indwitrycof
the bead or the firm, is due the wonder
ful success and harmonious working of
the great establishment. Mr. FROST and
his sou EDWARD give their porional atten
tion to the work at the shops, while the
business of the store is under the super
vision of L. it. FROST.
Without detracting in the least from
the importance and_ benefits of tho many
other business enterprises for which our
town is justly celebrated, we cannot re ,
frain from saying that the one under con
sideration is of more importance to the
growth and prosperity of 'Towanda, than
any of them; and it is high time that the
public should have a better understand
ing of the relation. the firm and their im
mense concern bears to the business life,
and substantial groWth of Torianda.
" MB. Emron :—A year ago the 6th of
last APril, a company composed of a few
of the active business amen of Tewanda,
was formed, known as "The N. Y. Fan
ning Mill Co., for the purpose of manu
facturing and selling the "Boss" Fan
ning Mill in the States of New York, Mass:-
achusetts and j Yermont, the right to man
ufacture and sell said null having been
secured of J. W. JouNsON, the . patentee.
- This N. Y. Co. has been at work in the
State of New York about one year the Ist
day of June, as it took until that time to
get ready, with teams, wagons, men, 4:;c.,
to commence work: The superior merit
of the mill Was thoroughly established last
season, at the State and' County Fairs of.
the. State of New York: It was placed
0.11 exhibition at the State Fair at Elmira,.
and obtained the - first premium as a Fan-
rin g Mill and Grain Separator. It was
afterward taken to several county fairs in
the same State, and awarded the tirtt pre
mium for' the same important combina
tion. All, or nearly all of the mills el:tith
ing to' separate i.,;fains, icannot chaff at all,
and do . not claim to, the only important
feature of their mill is the separating of
grains. Farmers andAnuctical men can
readily star the importance; of this feature
of the " Boss" mill. It can separate all
grains that any mill claims to or can sop
anite, and aftheiame time, with a change
of screens/which can be done very easily,
hati a first class chaffing mill. Some of
the "most practical farmers of the State of
New York have given this celebrated mill
a closol and careful examination, and pro
nounce: it the most perfectly constructed
mill for all kinds of work they bad ever
seer.. 'This Company has been at work
steadily increasing their business until the
last order of their :went in the Western
part of New York, who is one of the-com
pany, is for from one to two ear lotids per
week. I will here give an extract from a
letter written by G. .P. Lou); agent, to
L. B. Ronumts, tlic manufacturer of the
mills for the Company:
"Mu. llonoEm.:—Can you giro any
idea how many mills you can furnish this
locality'per 'week from now until Christ
mas ? It looks as though we would want
2 per week for 6 weeks, and after that
until Christmas, 50 per week."
Now this illustrates .the progress the
company is Making in the sale of the eel
ebrated " Boss:' mill.
The United States Company, -formed
here recently, commencing work the tirst
day of done, of all the remaining States,
are sellin4 mills rapidly. faster than they
can get them manufactured. Mr. L. B.

TILE lIIWTORY
want.in our literature has been so Widely
felt andso universally acknowledged; as
that of a complete and compact history of
Pennsylvania, adapted to the popular pe
rusal thrmigh its attractive narative, and
accepted as, an aiithority through its full
and i.ceurate pre:,entation of all the facts
in our eareerlas :a State. This singular
lack has been! made apretrent more than
ever before.by the completion of the first
Centennial of American ludependviice.
Every citizen has been ma& to feel
that by this great event intelligence and
patriotisin both call for a thorough knowl
edge of ;the history and especially the
early history iif our great Commonwealth.
Dr. ;Wu. 11. Etax, of Harrisburg, a
gentleman well known in literary circles,
has undertaken to meet this demand,. and
to till thi.4 vacant Place in our literature.
•He has devoted a number of years to this
labor,, and his publishers, Messrs. D. C.
GooDnitn & Co., also of Harrisburg,.now
(lax to the people of Pennsylvania the
only work ever written co: taining both a
complete history of the State and a histo
ry of each county separately—the whole
'brought down to the present year,lB76.
The plan of the work is must admira
ble. It pens with a. civil, political and I
military history of the State, which will
occupy about 400 pages, and the remain
der of the work is defoted to giving a sell
at-ate and distinct history .of each of the
sixty-six cOunties of the State. - Each
county history is written by some promi
nent resident of the county. Among the
contributors to -the work we find the
names of suet}
. tnen as THOMSON' WEST' 1 1
COTT the great Philadelphia historian,
,1
who has written the. History of Plilladel- 1 ,
phia for this work; .4.A.MUEL P. ThATES, of .
Meadville, who furnishes the history of
Crawford county, and also the well known
historian of our own county, Rev: DAvin
CILk;%T, of Wyalusing, whose history of
Bradford County is not enrpasscd by any
other in the entire work. Mr. CRAFT
has taken special pains to have our coun
ty
well represented. It has been a task
of no small importance to gather tagoth
cr
the multitude of facts, incidents and
reminiscences and so arrange them as to
form a pleasing and interesting narratite
and at the same time a thorough and ac
curate history.' The work will: be com
plete in one royal octavo volume (extra
huge size),: containing over 1000 pages,
and will be embellished with over 300 new
and elegant engravings. Altogether
will constitute a complete encyclopedia
all that "pertains to Pennsylvania, and the'
illustritlons Will form a: panoramic view
of the entire State. The most emminent '
artists : Lave been employed to represent
the scenes and places of interest, views of
the principal cities. portraits of all the
governors, numerous- historical scenes;
all of which have been
engraved in the highest style of the en
graver's art. . .
Thu youth of our State will find in this
voluine the only work in existence which
will enable their to become thoroughly
conversant with the past history and pres
-ent condition of our glorious common
wealth, ; while the aged citizen I will take
pleasure in reading of the days when he
too was a participant in the active scones
therein described.
