School board of Towanda borough, and

cil. His influence in the affairs of This

the spirit of the time and was always - in
favor of progress.
In personal qualities, Mr. Montauye
was a very • remarkable young marl; His
intellectird gifts were of a high order.
Ilis mind was acute, keen, quick- and
clear. lie reached truth not so much by
logical-process as by intuitive insight.
He was well read in law—bad a deep
comprehension of
. its fundamen`al princi
ples—and in the practice and contest of
the Court Room was the equal of any
nu, , Mber of the Bar. ; 'Had his physlical
stile been more vigorous he would un
doitlitedly have attained a high position
in his profession. lie "Bad also -eminent
administrative gifts. In politics he was
wise to forsee and quick to plan ; while
his energy in the execution of his plans
was thelcss and irresistible. Ile was a
hard man to beat in a political contest;

tude to his talent, libeirality and energy.
But his strongest taste was for hoops.

Akin to his love of books was his love of
ifictiatk. All beauty, indeed, was dear to
him. Ile craved it as the necessary nu
triment of his son!, and delighted iu it
with all a lover's. fondness and joy. To
him a thing of beauty was a joy forever.
