lroriified by this high authority, I shall
venture to offer some of the reasons why.
qelieve that, other things_ being equal,
small are super IA- to large schools.
iOne of the Most innlortant elements of
success in any pursuit, is enthusiasm—a
z4alous love :for the work 'in which one
rilay be engaged. This is title of men of
all trades and occupationg--but most eiri
phatically is it true of the student. The
ht l iar Who hates his books , /rill not
Ttuly and ea WO( study. - The most im
portant i-tep, therefore, in the education
of children is to inspire their minds with
tare for their studies. Their progress
tiepondA 11p) this tipm . .e than upon ani-
And herein I think the teach-

+. - er the teacher of a large school. In a
the rrlations between the
acher and his pupils may be gotnewhat
intimate and personal. and Ittrnep be has
a great opportunity to influence the 'char

alfolar. If the teacher himself possesses
the spirit of the true scholar, there is a
greater probability that he will inspire
his pupils with the same spirit, than there
is in ircroW,ded schoul,
!I In a small . - clnyol there is not stitch a
!multitude of subjects and objects to en
i,tross and distract , the attention of the
teacher, as in a large one. He is• likely
.to have-more time to form and carry out
Ids . plans of instruction and discipline,
'and more leisure to make himself tho
yenghly familiar with The subjects which
he is teaching. This is one reason why a
college is superior to an academy or, high
school, and why., an academy or ltigh
setool is superior to an ungraded district
school.
• In a'sniall school more of the energies
;11.1M teacher may be expended in; the
pork of instructing, and less in the Work
lf goVerning the scholars; than En a
crowded school. To most teachers;: and
perhapsto all teachers, the task of keep
ing a large number of scholars in order is
somewhat burdensome; and interferes se
riously with the wtak which they could
. L./
wish to do for their classes.,
If all:this is true, it follows th 4 the
great obstacle in the way of gradinginany
of our country schools, is - not the Want
of a sufficient number of scholars, but the
_Want of means: not the sparseness of the
populttion, but its poverty; or possibly-,
in some cases, it my be the want or suffi
eient educational enthusiasm and enter
prise among, the people to : !furnish: their
children with the best education 'Which
their means will allow: - .
An attempt is being made in one of the=;
Country school-districts of this countY; to !
maintain tiro grades during four Months
of the year. The number of children of
school age in the district is about
. fi - ?rty..
It is needless to say anything in `parlicu
lar in regard to it. until it has been been
whether the experiMent is likely to prove
permanently successful or not. If it
should prove successful, the value 'of the
example to some other districts similarly
situated (ight to be considerable.
If the country schools are ever to be
lifted out of the ruts,' some t experiments
must be made. And it is better for the
people to put their own shoulders• to the
wheel, than to be , calling -forever upon
somellereples for assistance.
But. whatever the people may .do for
the education of their children indepetid- .
. .
! ently of the public school system,: ought
to be suliordinate_and•stipplemental to it,
and nut in opposition to it; otherwise
mere harm than good would be done.
VECDEX, SR. ,
Who of us has not felt disgusted with
the sender of a manuscript which Was al
most illegible. To us it seems a shame
to the writer and anything but a compli
ment to the one for', whom it is written.
ft seems to declare that he does not con=
sider the person Of sufficient importance
to waste on him the time required to
make it legible; that the five minutes
which it would. require to put the letter
into readable characters are of more. im
portance than the thirty that it takes the
reader to decipher it. •
A generation ago a handsome hand
writing was regarded as a most graceful
accomplishment. A gentleman Would'he
more ashamed of a shabby Manuscript
than of a shabby coat. Al! public records
espeCially were in handwriting that rival
ed copy-platei Children at sebool were
_taught to regard elegance of penManship
as of not less importance than proficiency
in' other studies. - Now some people seem
to be really ashamed of good writing, and
the snobbish opinion prevails that it is
beneath a man of ability to write so that
people can read it: that a man must_ write
as the choir sings in church—with a • Stu
died effort to prevent his words ;from be
ing intelligible, • Supriose the :preacher

style.of oratory. The lawyer would con

.c:mrt and jury, but - seems to foiget that
he is coMmitting a similar error, when he
writes to his client in a hand which be
cannot read. • 'Nothing can be mere ridic

the.tnistakent view of the subject could be

Facts thus orally presented to interest

clinched, that the jostle and turmoil of
future business or pleasure cannot dis

But a secondary, if not the principal
ehject, may be attained by requiring all
pupils able to write, to present the sub
stance of the instruction at the close of
school, or next morning— compositions'
disguised,— which are returned by the
teacher at the recitation in spelling, read

corrected and marked. More practical
spelling and grammar will thus be taught
than is usual in many schools by: ordinary

From the bloom of youth and health;

" WHEN DOCTORS DISAGREE ?

says that when the title "Miss" is used
with a name, the whole term is made plu
ral by making plural the title' only. Ex.-
ample : The Misses Brown. Butler de
nounces this as an imitation of. French
methods, incorrect, and not used by any
classical authorities. Butler's method is ;1
to form the plural by adding "s" : to the';l

latter method.`

sentence seems ambiguous : "The cele-)

Query : Was it one lady named Lyon,

" Nothing ,is worth _ fighting for.l'
"Worth" is a predicate adjective, deli
cribing nothing. "Fighting for," is used
as a noun in . the objective • case, being
equivalent to struggle.
" Tbey knelt before they fought.`'
"Before !' is a preposition, having for its.
object the sentence " they fought;" for if
the word "battle" followed "before,l"
all would admit the prepositional foree.•
Many persons, however, insist on dispolp
