Monne& The most endearing title
everbestowed upon human being, is that
of 11 3tother." Holy Writ likens the love
of the Saviour to that of a mother• fer her
offspring. No , matter bow far tie son
may, stray from the path of virtt e and
rectitude, the mother's heart ever longs.
after him, and her affection is always
ready to piliaW his wrongs. It is
strange aW unacotxtntatee thing to see a
on so forget himself and the duty he,
o%ell her veto bore him, as to ill tr-at or
scorn his mother. The memory of all that
she bu suffered for him, of the days of
ceaseless toil, and sleepless nights spent
in watching over his helpless infancy; her
self sacrificing devotion to his comfort
and pleasure in' youth, and her bright
hopes and anticipations for his happiness
and prosperity in manhood. should be a
guarantee of filial love and gratitude'in
the most debased son, and claim for her
under - all circumstances, that love and
reverence due a mother.
These thoughts suggested themselves
to us the other evening, while listening to
the earnest, prayerful pleadings of a de
voted mother with her reckless son. The
young man in question is an only boy,
and was reared with the tenderest care,
and gave promise of becoming the com
fort and support of his parents in their
declining .years. But evil associations led
to bad habits,- and to-day the young man,
instead of being a joy to his father and
mother, is a. source of constant fear and
anxiety on theit part. The coarse, inde
cent and profane epithets, hurled at his
'entreating and almost heart-broken moth
er, fairly sent the cold ehills over us, and
we, left - the scene , heart-sick, and with a
renewed determination to fight more un- I
ceasingly the traffic which was the cause I
of that poor, stricken, sorrowing mother's
grief, and her only son's shame and dis
, 'grace. It is unnecessary to say the young
man was tinder the influence of liquor.
Uncontrolled by that vile poison and do-'
stroyer of all that is good and noble in
man, litp boy could so insult and reproach
his mother. We hope and pray that the
foolish, : erring young man may reflect up
on the great wrong be has committed,
I and on tended .knee ask forgiveness of
that loving mother, and determine that

self, for the sake of his own good name,
the love and obedience he owes to his pa
rents, and his hope of a happy future,
Inever again to touch a.iything which will
intoxicate. 4 The knowledge of such a res
t elution . faithfully kept, would give his
I mother ceaseless joy, and gladden the de
! dining years of both his parents. "Oh f
wine; if thou bast no other name to be
I known by, let us call thee devil."
