from the incompetent. as the efficient and
faithful seek occupations where merit is
rewarded.
Directors should insist on inspecting
the certificates issued by the Superintend.
ent, although they arc by no means an
infallible guide. We.cbelieve that an ex
amination, largely oral, enabling dirct-
Ors to hear explanations, methods,
.etc.,
by various teachers, and thus selecting., CnANDELIERS,
from anibility to leurh, rather than sOlv-
Mg a few examples, is preferable.
Many teachers indicate a correct p,7,-.1
cog on examination:, and perhaps obtain
correct answers, who are utterly unable
to illustrate or teach in the school rOOni,
yet perhaps arc graded No.l. While others
failing to solve a few knotty problems,
; •
are graded 3 to 4, and yet could - excel in
evidanation and tact in the school r4orn.
Still, where directors' have not pershnal
knowledge, the certificate runst lie a
guide. .
Many directors object to employing in
experieneed teachers. Experienced and
progressive teachers, who have profited
by experience, arc doubtless preferable;
yet au inexperienced teacher will usually
do more during - his first term than many
fossilized antiquarians.
A poor yeller may teach spelling well.
In Geography, anti Arithmetic, the an

this page; also the grade of recitation ,by
some pupil at dictation of tho teacher du

Just before close of school on Friday,

A teacher's pocket or term register, ar
