ED111111: The estimation in which
teltehing, asallminentisheld among the
vulgar, is not calculated .to encotunge.the
vanity of teaelters. One need not mingle
rducb with the uncultivated and ignorant;
os_ to make many inquiries of tilos, to as
in tbat in their . - opinion teaching is
rither a small business for anyone to be
eraged in. If a young mart! is only
* tart enough, they think it is far better
and more respect able for him to begin his
cfrcer in life, as a peddler of lightning
r?ds, a horse-jocket or a !speculator . in
"deacon-skins," • (bless ns f) than as a
teacher.
Now, so far as poor, inefficient teaching
concerned, it may as well be 'admitted
at once, that this opinion is not unjust.
There is not a more miserable. vocation
tban that of the inefficient, unsuccessful
t6cher. But as for the good teacher, let
liim magnify his office. No one engag
ed in a more satcsfactory and inspiring

basis, to form his own public, to make so
many fast friends among the younger

TEE BEST CELTOBE 1.13 SELE-COLTURE,
The highest and most effective' culture
If all resolves itself into self-culture. The
qducation received at . school mid college
is but a beginning, and is mainly valuable
m so far as it trains us in the habit of
tio l ntinuous application, and 'facilitates
10f -education after a definite ' plan and
item.
To enable the mind freely to exercise
.its powers, it is necessary, everiunder the
itiost thorough system , of culture, that
t!here should be occasional gays for free
Operation. Thus left in some measure to
lind_out what it can do and what it can
not - do, it will gain in strength and activi
tly, and the evils arising froM a:tOo entire
dependence on the teaching 761Wiers , will
lie, in a great degree, avoided. Often the
lest education of u man is that which he
gives himself while engaged in'the aetive•
liursuits of practical life.
';Putting ideas into one's head, will do
the head no good, no more than putting
things in a bag, unless it react upon them,
zpake them its own, turn them to account.
It is not enough," said John LOcke, "to
(tram ourselves with a great of col
lectious; unless we Chew them over again,
they will not give us strength :arid nourz
iihment." That which is put into us by
Others is always far less ours.Ahan that
fhich we acquire by our own diligent and.
persevering effort. Knowledge 'conquered
* labor becomes a possession-:-a proper
tt entirely ; our own. A greater vividness
slid permanency of impression is secured,
and facts thus acquired becomoregistered.
1# the mind in a way that mere imparted
ii formation can never produce. This
kind of self-culture also calls forth power
arid cultivates strenght. The seltsolntion
of one problem helps the mastery, of an
other, and thus knowledge is ca rried into
faculty. Our own active effort is -the es
sential thing; and no facilities, 'no books,
n'ri teachers, no amount of lessons learned .
by rote, will enable us to dispense with it.
Srich a - spirit gives birth to a living teach
which inspires" with pirr•crse the
whole man, impressing a' distinct stamp
upon the mind, and actively promoting
tie formation of principles and habitudes
orconduct.
The best teachers have been prompt to
recognize the importance of self-eulture,
arid of stimulating the student early to
accustom himself to acqaby knowledge
hi active exertion of his own faculties.
!They have relied more upon training
tijan upon telling, and sought: to make
theii - pupils themselves active parties to
the work in which they were engaged,
'us making teaching something far high
than the mere passive reception of the
scraps and ps and details of knowled. This

hq said, '!send a boy to Van!Dieman's

h self of his advantages." !' If,' there

a other occasion,, "which is truly admir
