En. 14lPottifit : Thee is a subject that.
we think needs 'some attention outside of
what the regular authorities may give it,
and we know of no better way to bring it
to notice than !through the ItEronvEn.
We 'refer to the attempt to make the old
Chennue , Bridge" free. at the expense
of the comity. Now, we are in favor of
the principle of . free bridges, but think'
e,FI r system does not warrant the county
in building the one referred to, 1 is
well known, it belongs to a class of river
bridges not usually built by counties, and
if the Present petition should be grant e d,
how long wongit Is..before other locali
ties would clamOr for the same facilities?
And.by having such a precedent to refer
to, we should hive to continue to buy out
or build new free bridges at from four to
seven points on the Susquehanna • and
Chemtmg rivers;‘to satisfy the people, of
different localities.
If the State Lad nuule-it a part of "ifs
duty tci bridge the -larger streams at
necessary points, and place them in
charge of the counties to keep in repair.
or to replace, :uid the counties tirbuild all
of the class. and tlie towns to
see that the third class was supplied:
then «c think pir cause of complaint need
exist. But afterthe rivers have been sup
plied by stock companies with bridges at
convenient - points, and wherever it would
pay, we do not favor the plan of
county's buying up trh.rt ,rentaiw of a
bridge, so, that the stockholders May get
their first investment back at the expense
of the tax-payers, and open a way for
large additional expense to the county by
similar plans. We do not.ay that this is
a lob, — but it looks very much like it.
If the present 'Company cannot keep up
a bridge, let theM offer to dispose of their
privileges at reasonable sum, and see if
some one will 314:4 build a bridge. If it
will not pay a company, is the connty
warranted in bridging such a lame stream
at all? We, do' not wish to "progress"
backward.',' but it is necessary to consider
well before beginning a system that would
lead to greater expense to Bradford coun
ty than a majority of its inhabitants de
