are told that this anectdote moved

The preface to the second series of
the addresses 'says "Sobs and tears

ple of the way in which Mr. Moody
deals with the most awful of subjects
which can engross the human mind:
" Not long ago there was a man
complaining about my talking about

lie 'dill not believe in it. It took
some ime to look the subject up, and
I was amazed to find so niuch in

"Two years ago 'a friend of mine

to doubt there are thousands of
persona on whom this method of
preaching would produce no impress
sion, or at least not the kind of im
pression which Mr. Moody is seeking
to create ; but still it is net•ditilcult
to understand why it succeeds so
well. 'For Mr. Moody is. evidently
in earnest, awl he endeavors to make•
the great truths of religion clear to
the,comprehension of the most illit
erate. 'of his audience. Ile encour
ages everybody to believe that itf..
start conversion and securitj-, of
eterna peace are within their reach.
No time need be lost. No daiuhts
need be entertained. The writer ,of
the i nt roduction, to the addresses
says: " The vigor and earnestness
with which he charged his hearers to
obtain ';it once the - pardon of sin, and
power to 'break sway from a sinful
life; were extremely effective." , '
Moreover, Mr., Moody plays much
upon those feelings which appeal
most deeply , to the univereal human
sympathies. The loss of parents,the
love - of a mother or father fdr a child,
the death of those irhp are Most dear
to us, these are the themes on which
he greatly dwells—and tku ram will
ever dwell upon them in a feeling'of
tendernesa and patting Witrioht Mov
ing the hearti of iill wire' hear him.

manner in which Mr. Moody

Jesus was thirsty anweary. lie was
thirsty enough to ask he`i for water, but
not to drink: he was i ' not too, weary to
give her instruction 111 the way of salva
tion (iv: 31). Ilii, request awukaijed her
surprise. "The lows hohr nolamaiarity

paitly due to their i m4ed oneu—Towns!:
and Pagan—and partly, to a religious ri
valry. (2 Kings xvii: 33-41; John iv: 20).
Jesus sees in her quick replyjan oppor
tunity ter lead this ignorant woman into
the truth. Sa ht l forgets his thirst, and
answers to her wondering question : "If
thou knewest the' gift of God, I etc." (v.,
10). This gift was llim.self.l (iii : 16).
"Living ,dater" 0 opposed in the East
to cistern-water, or the waters of reser

This answer was not apprehended by
the womari, but' she evidently felt that
she was in the presence of a Superior
Pelson. No dottlit the countenance and
healing arid words of Jesus all tended to ,
impress her with a sense of rare benigni
ty and unusual dignity. "The woman

title of respect. Tholuek tlainkai her reply
Sauey." Meyer says : " The woman
treats the enigmatical word of, Christ at
flint as Nieodemus does (Hi: 4), i ut morel)
thoughtfully, and at the same time more
pertly, and with feminine iseidiness of
speech." But her remarks (irs. 11, 12)
Were doubtless designed to' be respectful
to Jesus, while' marked by spirited na
tional pride. It was an apOsent fact
that lie had no autiequo to draw} with—by
which she; meant a skin bucket, with
three cross: sticks tied round the mouth
to keep it open, and which was let down
into the, well by a lope of goat's hair.
}tow then emdd lie draw water , from the
deep well?. Or could itbe—a supposition
that her national pride' rejected—that he
was a prophet weater , than Jacob, who,

brightness lof mind'and a touch' of quick
humor about her reply, which give ris a
favorable impression ef the woman's men
tal endowments. Were the artist gifted

Jesus does not stop to discuss the com
parative great:mass of Jacob, nor the ex
cellence of the old well. Tier, question,
"Art thou greater than our father Ja
cob 2" is virtually answered in what fol
lows. Jesus is himself the Messiah (look
ed for by Sainaritam as well asjews) and
therefore the Giver of the water of eternal
life; and hence he roust be greater thsti
Jacob and all thepatriarehs Will prophets.
But first (v. 13) he shows that he does
not mean material water. This, even
