ToWANDA, Pa., May 24, 1873.
3.11' DEAR You have sent me a
nil without tuldress or post-mark : how
do you expect me to reply to you I know
of no It - ay except to publish, and then it
mr& nt,t reach you. But if it should,
willJsay this first: Never write another
letter Without first writing place and date,
and birth° next place never write what
may j ust . well understood without
To n had no need to telime that
I reqnested you to write, or that you
promised to do so,' for I was in no danger
of forgetting it; nor that I told you to
_learn, So you might teach, for I knew it .
when I said it; nor that you did not think
much of it at the time, for I knew you
did not; nor that you had i thought ' of it
often 'since, for I expected you would.
There Are juSt two things in your letter
of eonsequenee, and they may be express
ed in a- single line, thus : "I wish .to
qualify myself to teach; please tell me
how Or thus : "Please tell me kw
to qualify myielf to teach?" To this re
quest I promptly and cheerfully respond.
And as a matter of the very first import
ance, Place yourself under the charge of
the most successful teacher you know, not
one who bysigeculiar methods achieVes pe
culiar success; but one who in the use of
common modes !and methods, succeeds
-peculiarly. And then observe and yield
a ready and I willing obedience to every
rule, regulation, and order of your teach
er. Never, on any consideration,- place
yourself in Opposition to your teacher.
YOU may not approve all his methods; you
may c(insider Iris discipline too strict; you
may regard the lessons assigned WO long;
or too hard; Youniay even think the gov
ernment discriminating or unjust; yet,
while You remain a student, for your own
interest, for your individual benefit, sub
mit cheerfully and gracefully .to every
rule, regulation and requirement of the
sehool.l And in the next place learn thcr
roughly everything you design to teach.
F.speci:dly study the alphabet. Make
yourself familiar with the nice shades of
difference in the vowel sounds, especially.
llt is 'pot necessary, in order to teach a
common school, that you should know
everything, but it is necessary that you
shouldjk-now thoroughly all that you pro
pose td teach. And yet there is one thing
more, perhaps quite as - important as any
thing rise. jThis is the ability to Jule
without seeming to rule; to govern with-.
out auiof government; to
of t he f
main thin order, without in fj any case en
foreingerder; and to be absolute master,
and *yet 'to be, and seem tO be, the servant
of all. J No instructions .of mine can con- '
.1
vey DLit.; knowledge, no words I can write,
can impart this ability, but you and every
other 'person who woukt: successfully
teach, must learn the art of ruling minds,
instead - of Undies, of reigning in the
hearts of soar pupils,'and net simply pre
siding as the Autocrat of the school-room.
