Having the requi site a'itiOttitt of education, we lOieve the next most important requisite to make a siicy-ssful teacher is a good - deyelopment common sense. That the spelling and defining of words should not lie, as they are in the text-cooks comMonly used, an exclusive aet of memorizingj has been reconized by' inure than 'oft observed. The right way of learning words is . in connection with sentences in which some fact or thought is expressedL By this method there, is nit association of ideas with the Wools that: tends to' permanently fix their form and Meaning in the memory. That we do renferriber words tolerably well, is due to tinrlfamiliarity with them in literature; ;Tlie spelling book rarely lends any , reel aid to the ftwner; in the manner used, it taxes his energies wastefully and unscientifically. In. each case so far' the duties of the office have been well perfOrmed by the femak; incumbents, and, I will add, with somewhat more - care and *Rightful in terest than are Usual in this;ollice. The examinations of .teachers were more thorougffly and conscientidtuly made, and visitations of schools, particularly in the stammer, were more frequent, inspections more careful, and - suggestions and meth ods more freely brought to the considera tion of the young .teacher., While possi bly the novelty of this promotion to office and the determination on the part of the women thus elticted to shirw what they can do, have contributed to the improved result above designated, I have no hesi tation in declaring my conviction that if to-day the supervisory in our schools was equally divided.betweenmea and women, the quality of the work wonld be, far su perior to what it is at present. More time would be devoted to visitation in the school-room, not merely an horir's call the first reek of the term, when it is almost impniiible to test the full capabilities of the teachers, nor an hour at or near the closefpf the - school, when the poor shift less liork of the teacher is past all reme dy ; .fiut an hour at any time, when the schOol is in fun operation—in its every day working dress More careful thought would be given by womeli to the physical condition of the younger pupils, to seats, desks, heat, cold, ventilation, perfas of study and relaxation, methods of recita tion, object of instruction, the attractions of the school room; - factures, ornamenta tion of room and grounds, indeed all those numerous items which go so far to make our best schools home-like and cheerful, instead of bare, dreary and forbidding. Why should not the sliperintending presence of a woman: charm,. adorn and rectisy the school room as undoubtedly it does the home? In our homes, our church es, asylums; hospitals; in our refonnatory institutions, even 'in our state prisons, as now conducted, we recognize and require the ameliorating, directing influence of noble-minded, intelligent women. Are schools an exception'to this? We think not. Both from personal observation and theoretically, we advise that the employ ment of women sehool supervisors be fur ther extended than at present, and if any legal objection stands in the ways, as in some of our sister States, we recommend that such obstacles be removed by legisla tive enactment."
