- Plowing and Plows. _
Stime .of our readers will no doubt
think thatin writing out the above
heading, we have Made the • common
mistake of placing the : cart before
the horse; but when we consider that
it is the kind of plowing that deter
mines the nature and quality of the
plow, hence the manner of plowing
is thelmary subject . The renown
ed A. 'yard eta; ..R that ha retired
'in disgust from aliticultnral pursuits,
Fecause he invariably found that no
matter what the season of the year,
or what was the crop, the soil was
wrong side and that the most
laborious - operation in the produc
tion of the crop was reversing it.
Artemus no doubt had intended to
be facetious; but in this case he came
nearer to-giving us an agricultural
essay than he had any idea.of. Now,
is the soil always wrong side up for
our crops? or is there any necessity
for turning it over every time we
will: to plant a_ crop ? It seems to
be absolutely needful that, t a 'sod
shourd be 'turned over; because, if
-reasonably stiff, no mechanical opera
tiOn would break it up sufficiently
for the crop, and even if this were
possible, too much kif the grass wonid,
remain on the surface to grow, aud
impede other operations.
We hate full faith that an imple
ment (for we" can hardly call a
plow) will sooner or later be invent
td,-which will thoroughly disiiitteg-.
rate the soil to a given depth, with
out the additional labor of ,turning
it over: It is true that this, has-all
been claimed for implements' already
invented, and we have tried ale of
them; and we have . found radical
faults in it. This implement, goes
by the name of a Rotary Spada"; and
a neighbor aptly compared its man
ner of Working to 'a dog digging oat
a ground hog; for it tears the soil up
and throws it behind the machine in
a loose mass, and just in the proper
conditionlfor a crop. On the stone:
less western prairies, this implement
works well; and the soil needs no
harrowing, the corn drills following
directly after it. some of our rea
ilsr.s no doubt ask how we are to
get our,inanure turned under? Toi
-itch we wal reply in. true Yankee
sqle, by asking Why' turn manure;
Under at all? We, as agriculturists,i
try esperiments, and; as we think,l
fix results, only to have them revers -1
-ed by ethers. - All these things seem,
to travel in, circles: and once ina;
long time we return to the original!
point, which IS always found in
sting nature. Nature believes in surf
fake manuring, and she ; does not
often err in ber practice; and all otir
fine clraWn
_theories must come down
-- _to her facts.' Nature does not reverse
.the soil after every crop. In our
opipion the. "model plow" will not
reierse the soil, but will , thoroughly
disintegrate and leave it in proper
onlei• for the crop without further
prcTarations.
