In such cases, however, when people cannot,

A. CORRE.SPONDENT of the \Vtlliame
port Gazette and Bulletin, has, been writing a
history of Sullivan county, and we extract the
following description of the coal region :
" Two miles from Schreyvogers, over the old
turnpike, we reach the village of Bernice, on
Birch Oreek,' where the great 'coal mines of
Salim county are located. Ilia not oar par
pose in these &ketches to speak in detail of the
mines, therefore, we merely givethem a pass
ing notice. ,
' you emerge from the grOt forest, the
first point of-interest, before — reaching tue
mines, is the village of Shinr.rsville. Like Ma
nersb'urg, described in a pr.-riot's sketch. tt
has a history. The place was laid out by a
stalwart Q Wier, named Andrew Shiner, who
was one of the contractors to_bnild the turn
pike. He was a remarkable min, and conform
ed strictly to the customs of hid sect. Having
received a part of-his fortune:in State lands, he
resolved to foundla town, and in accordance
with this idea laid it out on a magnificent scale
and commenced beilding.- Time rolled away,
but no settlers camp, and corner lota were a..-
sold, yet he hopefully looked forward to the
time when they would command fabulous
prices. Vain hope! At-length be left the
place in despair, and took.chkrge of a toll-gate
on the turn-pike at Berwick. On the old maps
of the State the name of the place'is laid down,
though there is not a vestige of the finely plsn
ned village now remaining to mark the spot
where the.visionary old 'man fondly' hoped to
found a town. • -
TUE CM MINES
' The village of Birch , Creek, at the c:al
mines consists of about seventy-five houses,
principally inhabited by miners. The mines
arc operated by the Sullivan Anthracite Coal
Company en an extensive scale, who own a
tract or 5,000 acres of land, nearly all of which
is underlaid with coal. Five drifts have been
driven into the side-hill, three of which are
worked. This coal is the finest or its kind In
the world, and the day is not far distant when
the business of the Company will be enormous.
Prof. Bush, of Yale College, recently made the
following_analysis of this soft anthracite, which
will serve to show the reader its value to man
ufacturers
Carbon
Volatile matter, chiefly Netter
BEM
coat is remarkably free from slatC
clinkers aml gas, and blackainithe are enthusi
avtic in rte praige. Being (.1. Slleb" pure quality,
burning without smoke, o3or, or noxious vapor
of any kind s its value for many purposes, es
pecially domestic uses, must be readily seen
. "The outlet forthis coat is by the way of the
Sullivan and Erie railroadi to Towanda, a dis
tance of 29 miles, where :connection is made
with the Lehigh Valley &ad. If the Money
ervek road wc,r:e completed through to the
mini r, as designed, this superior coal could be
delivered in Williamsport cheaper. than any
other. The distance from Williamsport to the
mines, by the projected railroad route, is 48
miler, and as railroad communication to
Hughesville is now open, only 33 miles remain
to be completed."
