INSTITUTE
MILLER FOX,
Pre•'t Board 'Trustees
' The movement of political affairs has kept pace
with the discirreries of science, and their fruitful
application to the industrial and useful arts and , the
convenience and refinement of social life. Great
wars and consequent revolutions have occurred, in.
volving national changes of peculiar moment. The
-civil war of our own country, which was at Its
height when the lied, volume of the • old work sp.
peered, has happily been ended, ands a new Milne
of commerciali and iftdustrial activity has been
commenced. I
Large accession's to our geographical knowledge
line be= made by the indefatigable explorers of
Africa. • I . _
The greet political revolutions of the last decade,.
with the natant result of the lapse of time, have
brought into public dew a multitude of new men,
whose names are in Avery one's mcmth., and of
whose lives every one is creams to know the putt°.
niers. Suet battles have been fought and Impor-
tant sieges maintained, of which the details are as
yet preserved 'only I n the newspapers or In the
transient publications of the day, but.which Ought
now totake their place in permanent and authentic
histuy.
In preparing the present edition for the .press, it
has accordingly been the aim of the editors to bring
down the information to the latest possible dates,
and to furnish in accurate account of the most rtt.
cent discoveries in 'denim, of every fresh produc
tion in literature, and of the - newest 'inventions in
the practical arts, as well as to give a succinct and
original record Of the progress of political and ,his
torical events.
• the work' hu been begun after long and careful
prelimiriarflabrr, and with the most ample resour
ces for carrying it on to a successful termination.
None of the original stereotype. plates have been.,
used, but ever* page has been printed on new type.'
forming in tut a new Eiloptedia, with the same
plan and compass as its predecessor, but with a far
greater pecuniary expenditure, and with such im
provements in Its composition as have beon sug
gested by longer experience and enlarged knowledge.
The illustrations which are introduced for the
first time in the present edition, hare been added,
not for the sake of pictorial effect. but to give
greater ludic:Ryland force to the explanations in the
text. They embrace ail branches of science and of
natural hietory, iand depict the - most famous sad re
markable features of scenery, architecture and art ,
as well as the various processes of mechanics and
Inanatactures. i Although intended for instruction
rather than embellishment, no pains have been
spared to lustre their artistic excellence ; the cost
of their execution is enormous , and it I. believed
they will and a ;welcome recepticn as an admirable
feature of the (yclopiedis, and worthy of its-high
`character.
This work is sold to Subscribers only, payalie on
delivery of each volume. It will be completed in
.sixteen large octavo volumes, each containing about
800 pages, fully. illustrated with anent ihonsaael:
