How to Drain Bogs.
A paper read before thp Farmers'
Club Was in answer. to a lettPr from
H. S. Sigourney, of Milton; Ifi r York,
who: desires to know the, best
_ methods of reclaiming bog meadows,
which john B. Sands, Gate,
Orange county, N. Y., gives in sub
stance as follows:—Keep your drains
well .opened. See to it that the

age. The caltilted grasses will
soon die out in this land. The best
grass for this purpose is what call
ed in Orange_ -county the foul
meadow grass 4 it yields a heavy
!crop' andimakes a fine quality pf hay.
Cattle ; prefer it to any other. I
would recommend for the working
of this ,meadow the Burlington plow
of New Jersey. It is made or . steel
and being groand sharp cuts through
the strong roots and turns the farrow
-slice complete., I also recommend a
good dressing of well rotted Manure,
if n ot bone dust. Some tiinothy,
red top, and four meadow) grass,
_ , twice the quantity you would use on
upland so as , to get a stiff sod. I After
mowiug never pasture suck ground,
' as the aftermath will save the grass
from heaviner b out daring frosty
Qrather.'. The depth to prow I leave
: each - man's judgment. I plow
from live to six inches. There is
much difficulty in ploughing, such
grclund the off horse or ok being
liable to mire in the farrow. pn the
Chster beg meadows, where they
raise so many onions, tlO - -k plow
much with one horse, the horse walli
inn by the side of the urrow.'
:Another farmer, who knew nothing
°of the plow mentioned by Ur.; Sands,
vaid a steel' prow of some kiadd must'
~ lie used. Still another . thought the

A PRILETONS' AMERICAN CY
CLOP.EDLLL
NEW REVISED. EDITION.
Entirely rewritten by the ablest writers on every
sablect. Printed from new' type, and illustrated
with Several Thousand engravings and Siam .
Thi work originally published under the title of
Tun LW ANZ6ICAN CTCLIPXDIA. was completed in
1863, since which time the wide circulation which it
has attained in all parts of the United States, and
the Signal developments which have taken place in
every branch, of science, literature and art, have ln
',duced the editors and publishers to submit it to an
exact and thorough revision, and to Issue a new
edition entitled Ttir. Aminamtat CreLorznon.
. Within the but ten years the progress of discovery
in every department of knowledge, has made a new
Work of reference an imperative want.
The movement of political affairs has kept puo
with the discoveries of science, and their fruitful
applicstioa to the industrial and useful arts and the
convenient* and .refinement of social life. Great
wars and pnaeqvent revolutions hare occurred, in
volving a n ti nal changes of peculiar moment The
civil war Of our own country, which was at its
height when the tut volume of the old work , ap
peared, hie happily been ended, and a new course
of commercial' and ' industrial activity has been
commenced.,
Large aceosdone to our geographical knowledge
have been made by the indefatigable explorers of
Africa.
The greatrevolutions of the last decade,
with: the natnral result of the lapse of time, have
brought into public view a multitude of new men,
-whose 1131111:4 are in every one's mouth, and of
whose lives every one is curious to know tars partic
ulars. Great battles have been fought and tumor,
tart sieges maintained, or which the details are as
yet preserved only 1 n the newspapers or in the
transient publications of the day, but which ought
now to take their place in permanent and authentic
history. 1
In preparing the present edition • for the press, it
has accordingly been] the elm of the editor* to bring'
down the Information tb the latest possible dates,
and to furnish an accurate account of the most re
cent discoveries In science, of every fresh produc
tion In literature, and of the newest inventions in
the practical arta, u*ell u to give a succinct and
original record of the progress of political and his
torical &eats.
Tbe work had beenlegun alter long and careful
preliminary labor, and with the most ample resour
ces for carrying It on ito a nofelleftil termination.
.
Noneof the original stereotype plates have been
used, but every page has been printed on new type,
forming In fact a new Cylopiedia, with the ume
plan and compass as its predecessor, but with a far
greater pecuniary expenditure, and with such im
provements In Its composition as have beon mug
gelded by longer experience and enlarged knowledge.
The illustrations which are introduced for the
first time in the present editicin, have been added,
not for the sake of pictorial effect, but to give
greater ludicity and force to the explanations in the
text. They embrace all branches of science and of
natural history, and depic t the most famous and re
markable features fery, architecture and art,
as well as the; various processes of mechanics and
manafactirree. Although Intended for instruction
rather that embellishment, no path* here been
spared to =Sure their artistic excellence ; the cost
of their execution is enormous, and - it hi believed
they will find 'a welcome reception as an admirable
feature .of the Cyclop-odia, and worthy of its high
character.
This work is sold to flubscribers only, payab'e on
delivery of each volume. It will be completed in
