time of year, when the " otherial mildness " of
`spring, althongti it may not be here, is eagerly
looked forward to; bat few people, Compara
fively speaking, } seem to realize how beautiful
a dingy back yard may become at the expense
of a little labor ind a very small amount of
money. Dail, unsightly walls may be covered
by bright green; leaves and starlike blossOms
of the convolvolus, while a narrow strip of
earth may be made to yield flowers enough to
perfume the .w hole house. Window gardens
may be made for a very small outlay of trouble
and eipense. Almost _ any boy is mechanic
enough to construct a box which will fit on the
windoW-sill, and a few flowers in pots will - .
smarten ,up a Zoom to a marvelous extent.
Boys and girls Make excellent gardeners, and
,they will find plenty to interest them in the
care of flowers, besides it will endow them with
a commendable industry, as well as a love for
the beautiful and a desire to make home at
tractive. ,

whitewash': Take a clean, water-tight barrel,
or other suitable cask, wad put into it, a half
bn.liql of hint. Slake it by pouring water over
it, boi.ing hot, :and in sufficient quantity to
cover it fife inches deep, and stir it briskly till
thoroughly slaked. When the slaking has been
effected; d•siolve it in hater, and add a solu
tion of two pounds sulphate of zinc and one of
common salt.

premise?, it may be important to know that a
beautiful cream dolor may be communicated to
the alive wash, by adding to it three pounds

come of the Ladies' Benevolent Association?
have they given up their work?" • We will an
swer, By no mean.. Oar meetings have been
simply suspended, while the ladies of the Asso
ciation have been efficiently working tot the
poor - in advancing the great and philanthropic
cause of - Temperonco, agreeably to the adage
that " ounce of prevention is worth a proand
of cure." Our visiting committees, in looking
up and ailing-our destitute poor;.,hiiie found
that a very large proportion of the distress and
poverti in Towanda is caused, as 'elsewhere,
either directly or indirectly by 'intemperance.
