Manuring Cora in the Hill.
The question how to retain the
fertility of the soil, and make our
crops pay best, is , one 'of the most
itnportancthat cordd be- presented.
The past. issuti , has been, -what
crop would pay beat without any
reference to 'retaining the fertility ,
of the soil ? But we are learning of
-late that the , most profitable crops
are not, in all' cases, those that will
bring the most, money, 'and
,:return nothing to the soil that pro
- ducted them.' - -
The c i tiestion, will it pay to manure
- corn in the hill with barn-yard
manure at\ the rate of from eight to
le,ads per acre, 'depends very
rn'ell upon the amount of manure at
Vand, and the labor to apply it with..
Taal' manure may be applied to other
j er'ors with less labor, we all admit,
jl4,tit will it s serve the object in dues,
iron ? We claim it will.' '
The wheat, crop is one in our experi
,that is suffering most from
eihoustion of soil, both in quality
und quantity. As you say, the far
raci-seeks the most profitable returns
from the manure, 'and we admit he

ingla•the hill, the question arises,
shall we divide the manure among
the,setral crops,' leaving none for
fhe grass, or shall we apply it to all
the 'crops_to be followed by grass?
The, wheat'''crop, in our experience,.
is the%inost important and remunera
ziOn where properly - cultivated and
maniired, lnd is also a good crop to
reed with. '
In order more fully to apply our
`ideas of the importance of the grass
crop, we quote the German adage:,
`'No grass, ,no stock; no manure; no
crops:" • Then in order' to secure a
good -!!catch",of grass, it is apparent

NEW REVISED EDITION.
Entirely rewritten by the ablest writers, on every
subject. Printed from new. type, and OW:rated
with Several Thousand engravings and Maps.
The work originally published under the title Of
TIES NZWAYEIII . CAN CrczorApra. Was coropleted In
1863, since which time the wide circulation which it
has attained in all parts of the United States, and
the signal developments which have taken place In
every branch of science, literature and art, have In
duced the" editors and publishers to submit it to an
exact and thorough revision, and to issue a now
edition entitled Tax AMERICA-1i CYCLOPJLEDIC
Within the last ten years the progress of discovery
In every department of knowledge, has made a new
work of reference an imperative want.
TO 30
The movement of political affairs has kept We
with the aiscoveries of science, and their fruitful.
application to the industrial and useful arts and the
convenience and refinement of social life. Great
wars and consequent revolutions have occurred, in
volving national cbadges of peculiar moment. t:he
civil war of our own country, which was at its
height when the last volume of the old work ap
peared. has' happily been ended. and -a new course
of commercial and industrial activity has been
commenced. L.
Large accessioni to our' geographical knowladge
have been made by the indefatigable explorers of
Africa.
The greet political revolutions of the last decade,
with the natural result of the lapse of time, have
brought into public view a multitude of new men,
whose names are .In every .ones month, and of
whose lives every one is curious to know tne partic
• Mars. Great battles have been fought and impor
tant sieges maintained, of which the details are as
yet preserved only i n the newspapers or in the
transient publicationspf the day, but which ought
now to take their place in permanent and authentic
history.
In preparing the present edition for the press, it
has according , y been the aim of the editors to bring
down the information to the latest possible dates,
and to furnish an accurate' account of the most re
cent discoveries in science, of every fresh produc
tion in literature, and of the newest inventions In
the practical arts, as well as to give a sncclnct and'
original record of the progress of political and his
torical events.
rbe work has been begun after long and careful
preliminary labor, and with the roost ample resour
ces for carrying it on to a successful termination.
'Sone of the original stereotype plates have been
used, but every page has been printed on new typo,
forming- in fact _a new ,Cylopredis, with the same
plan and compass as its predecessor, but with a far
greater pecuniary expenditure, and with. such im
provements in its composition as have been sug
gested by longer experience and enlarged knowledge.
'The illustrations which are introduced for the
first time in the present edition, have been added,
not for' the sake of _pictorial effect, but to give
greater lndicity and force to the explanations in the
text. They embrace all branches of science and of
natural-history, and depict the most famous and re
markable features of scenery, architecture and art,
as well as the varione processes-of mechanics and
manufactures. Although intended for instruction
rather than embellishment, no pains have been
spared to rnsure their artistic, excellence ; the cost
of their execution is enormous, and it isbelieved
they will find a welcome reception as an admirsble
„feature of the ( ycloptells, and worthy of its high
character.
