ABOUT CABBAGES.—There is a gieat
difference in the quality of cabbages.
Some varieties are invariably la
and coarse grained strong flavor, and
more or less of a . woody , ' texture
when cooked: For market purposes
the large varieties are more salaeble'
than the small,. because few persons
know anything abont„the different
sorts. A. cabbacr6 is cabbage to
them, ancl value is measured by
its size;_,quality not being understood
.or thought of by those who depend
upon the-markets for a,supply.
We remember when the - still fa
=la's Winningstaclt cabbage was in
trodUced, and the high recommenda
tion'which accompanied it—all true,
without doubt, as there' was no
reference to quality beyond , that it
wohld come to, maturity early, and
the heads were very firm and solid.
This- is ,very true, and this old
favorite still holds its own for market
purpOses; but, in our opinion, it is
far froth being a first rate smt rrr
account of the extreme firmness and
compactness 'of the heads approach
ing to near a, ligneous character.:
The Early York - and old Early
',Drumhead are, to our`taste, far bet
ter sort for home use; and will, when
well grown, answer equally well for
market.'
ror late market sorts the Afar
bleheadXaminoth and Late Drum
head still lead; but when one wants
a good, fine-grained, i sweet and rich
: cabbage, the marnmilth sorts muSt
be laid aside.
For cooking, the iavoy cabbages
are, unequaled, and 'there are both
early. and late - sorts. possessi
liMilar good qUalitie4. They requirea richer soil and' better care than
other varieties, and do:i not grow to
as large size: but they make up for
all this in excellence _'of flavor and
tPnderness.
, For pickling, thO -rcd varieties, are
usually - preferred; not', because they
are any better, but the deep, rich
color adds something to the appear
nnce, of even a dish of pickled • cab
bage.. -Those of •onr readers who am

The undersigned -will be lowered to receive at.

day. April 3d, on.Triday, April 17th. and on every
Friday during the months of May and AIM, and on
the second and fourth Fridays of July and August
next. On the thilritof,Aprii the price for good veal
calves, weighing; from 130 •to 200 lbs, Ida be 6X
cents per lb. For those weighing from 100 to 130,
teem 4 to 5 cents per lb. according to weight and
condition. After-that date the highest market prices
will bo paid for bath calves and lambs, being gov
erned .by general markets, A calf to fatten well
should never be allowed to run In the 'field or yard,
but should in -all cues be duel% confined in &clean
dry stable. where it will not have sufficient room to
run, and the cow should be driven into the stable
regularly two or three times each day, and the calf
allowed to suck all it desires, until it arrives to the
age of frem 5 to $ weeks, when it • will usually be
suitable for market.- Remember fed calves are not
desirable for veal, and if brought here will not be
bought except at low price.. Farmers that have
early winter lambs to dispose of, will find it greatly
to their advantage to sell them hcre by weight,
during the months of May and 'Jane. when they
are always in demand at high prices: Persons can
at any time ascertain what
_prices will be paid for
the next itueceeding week, by enquiring of me at the
