or of our general growth and development, I
trust I may bo pardoned for making some brief
allusions to our status among the surrounding
Mims. What fastened upon us the cognomen
of the "State of Litchfield," is more' than I
know. - 7 - It is true there was a spasmodic effort
to inaugurate a "Confederacy" here once upon
a; time, but it is my impression the name ad
hered prior to ,that. ;iWhatever 'it may have
been, we accept the christening and trust we
may ever be found shining with no uncertain
light in the illustriOns galaxy. There certain.
was a time within the recollection of Many,
when it was one of the Democratic stronghold;
—that, after the polls had closed, and a major ,
ity proclaimed sufficient to carry the county by
the usual majority, our patriotic old sires
thought they could whip half it dozeikStites.
That was a herd timo'for the old Whigs, who
for many years only polled three votes, and
generally left as soon as posssible after voting!.
Those times and enactments have changed.
Oar moral and political status is creditable.
The Democratic motive power,, thanks to ad
vancing eivilizatioo, has been ezbausteiL , We
are endeavoring to live "soberly and righteous
ly in this preSent world." A general prosperi
ty prevails among our people—a prosperity
commensurate with the exertion put forth to
secure it. Like the, sarrounding townships, we
are developing a village or centre, which in
daily growing in iimportance,.and which only
proves how many home advantages may be se
cured:by a united enconragement i of home in
dustries. Wo'have l stors and shops in our val

The needles flew, and the thimbles clicked the

and the quilt. grew steelier apd smaller, and
the ladies crowded closer together, and there
