The 'Object in. Applying Manure.
•
, This is,a question too little dis
. cussed and teo' frequently ignored
by the every day farmer.. Too many
work in. a some what aimless manner
in the application of fertilizers. If a
Ldefinite object is had in yiew, there
seems to be an indefinite idea how
that object is to be attained with a
considerable: class, and thus they
work less understandingly, and of
tentimes
_to, a considerable lois - in
several ways. One man has in view
• the permanent improvement of the
- prodnctivenes.s.of bis soil, while at
•
.the same time he is desirous ,of_ im
mediate returns froin the present
Crop.. • Another has in view.the grow
ing of the largest possible crop, leav
leg the p_c maned improvement of the
'Soil awe secondary consideration; and
ss bn to the end Of the chapter. The
„varieties of soil—Sandy loam, light
sand, Clayey loam, or clay, stony,
`o gravelly loam--are differently con
,stituted, and each is better adapted
to some special crop than the other;
some •of them are what .wei term
-' "light" soils, .while otheri are
"medium" or_ "heavy." No the
cultivator izA each of these varying
soils Wishe4 to attain a specific 'object
in its •ctflture, and to that end he
- 'applies fertilizerk and grows a crop
. 'which be finds, from experience, that
his -soil is adapted to. Scarcely, Any
one at all experienced would think
I :that the saute object would be at
tained by ,pplying manure `in the
same state, 'in the same manner, to,
each and all of these . varying soils.
Local experience And a knowledge of
local farming and circumstances al
ways best determines the matter of
application of : manure, and in the
discussion, of the subject all these
Matters should, be considered; but
my, questions, remain:_ What •is the
object in applying manure? Should
we let any other object take preced
ence of the present crop? Ono crop
is certainly all,' we are assured 'of.
. 'lf we applY manure to plowed and
hoed ground, it cannot be done with-
out in some way permanently improv
ing the same, for the aeration causes
the manor and soil to act chemically,
'proclencinr , the improvement.

Roots as.Matture
rt'-has been found that the
w roots Of,
a good croof red clover ' left in an
t• acre of land-after the removal of the
crop weigh ,5,580 pounds, or from
three to three and a half tons. The
same examination gave the weight of
'an acre of rye roots at 3,400 pounds.
( . A similar experiment' gave the
weight of the roots of alfalfa from! an
- acre at over five tons) All of this
matter is, of comae, valuable foil ithe
use of such crops as may be grown
during or after its decomposition.
-The Nell-known superiority of clover
Maiming crop, however,, is not
.(.lue alone ,to the great amount .of
organic matter - , -taken 'mainly from
the atmosphere, which the roots sup 7
ply, but also to the position in which
this,matter is 'deposited. •
The roots reach deeply into the
viliand on their decomposition they
serte • to, draw moisture from the
lower soil,.and by the' decomposition
of fertiliiing matter to a_considerable
depth, they induce the descent of the
roots and crops to a point where they
are much more sure of a supply of
moisture during the dry seasons than
they could ,be 'if T near the surface}
The'i again these keeply penetrating,
roots traverse: parts of :the subsoil

ME Rural New Yorker; speaking of

' Another mode recommended
(which we have not tiled, but which
said to work effectively,) is to
take the dons ifrem a tree in 1874
and graft oni a good thrifty tree

zcill be-got on each in alternate year's.
It is: llscL-aiserted that if you cut off
from'the thriftY tree the groWth of

the orchard from which the blossoms
have - been removed Will bear. This
is true. 'We have had experience in
this pia, tteri, - But it is better; we
think, Lto •thin out the fruit from
trees; after it sets, every year and
thus get an income from each tree
annually. This matter of thinning
fruit is not sufllciently attended-.to.
. With the present devices ter Pruning
and clipping, it will require ooinpara-.

to go through his trees and thin out
