Towanda company, Was in the City. yesterday.

The Meshoppen Miss and Towanda gentle
men seemed to take the most interest in danc
ing, but there was plenty of enjoyment f?r eve

county, and wo look in that direction for our
lessons of right, but are sometimes sadly dis
appointed. We had flattered ourselves that
When Local Option had becoMe - a law, and all
good citizens, including the ministers of To
wanda, had taken so decided a public, stand in
favor of temperance, and also in favor of OM
taming or executing the law, that the surround
ing townships would follow the example, and
do likewise. But with all the apparent effort
and boasted means to dry up the channel of
wickedness resulting from intemperanee,we
have anxiously waited to see the first effort
made to stay the destroyer. Those under
ground pits have' had free license to sell and
dispose of their poisons to any who could give
the whisky, password, , and allowed to Igo to
'other places to . palm Off their rowdYisni upon,
those who would at. least licipe for better '
things. , I
Onr peaceful valley was annoyed by com
pany of about twenty rude fellows, on Sunday
last, brought here in carriages by one of your
townsmen. They: gathered at the grove; near
Weston Station, arpuid with "local option,'
but the - ram pievented their enjoying the
woods, and with bottles and kegs they repaired
to the saw-mill near by to regale themielyes,
taking.one of our young. men with them t:o
more license to their desecrations. After .fin
ishing their feast, they were politely waited up
on by the cars in returning to Towanda.
For the last few years, the leading citizens,
both men and women, of Carbon Valley,!,have
baen anxiously striving for reform, and the
present season-have been favored by a very in
teresting Slbbath-school, superintended by B.
K. Ilawsmor, of Monroe, and aro puttieg forth
our best efforts to establish right princiles in
the minds of our growing girls and boy d, and
the inhabitants generally, praying God to bless
our efforts to this end ; but'when such an out
rage as the' above is imposed upon us, we feel
that efforts in a moral direction may arove
frOtiess. Wo hope another such eihibition
will never be repeated upon our would-be
