Ten Awes Enough.
• It is a question whether writers
- who attempt to; make belielie that
farming is unliketany other buaineas,
and that one has only to purchase a
small piece of land to become wealthy
in a few years, do not do an amount
of injury that is perfectly incalcula
• ble. Ilupdreds of men are drawn
- every year from purshits which afford
them a fair living, to farms and col
(Mies, and settlements of various
kinds, 'only to meet with untold ,
privations and discomforts , for years,
•if not to end in absolute ruin. We
all remember how a few yews ago,,
thousands were unsettled in theirl'
• senses and their homes, by the iv
pearance of h little book entitled
"Ten Acres Enough."- Any one who
readit attentively might see that inn
the fictitious Stretch given of the of
who succeeded so well, most, of e
success was made to depend on
sale_ at high prices of a new black
berry root. A man could do this as
well on one acre as ten, - but
,the
chance of a new root of thi s charcter
w ill mit 'come le one man in a
thousand, or one man in a, lifetime,
and to take such very rare instances
into account in the general product
of ten acres is an absurdity. Still
the public generall do not dwell long
enough on these things as they read
_ them, but, taking in the general
prase, "Ten acres eacitigh," madly
„, rush on to , distraction.
We are reminded of this just now,
by seeing in the, American Agricul-'
turist, a sensible reply to a corres
pondent whO proposes to 'do busi
ness in the city, and yet try to make
a farm of ten acres pay. As a rule ! ,
it tells him a man cannot do business
in: the city, rnd at the same time car
ry on a farm or - market-garden to
advantage. It might have added
that instead of its being even a rule,
it is on the other -hand a terrible
lose.
-We have in our mind as we write,
a very worthy couple who brought
up a large family in Philadelphia ,
respectably and as well as most hard- '
working people do: They had gone
beyond middle life, and most of
their children had grown up and
were doing for themselves.. Years
ago they started a small store, which
the wife tended while the husband
'faithfully followed'hie daily . work.
It was a fair success, and' up to a
year ago they had managed to save
about $3,000. The various "agricul
tural" articles they read by such over,
entlinsastic writers as those, we have
already referred to,led them to think
that business was too slow for peo
ple advancing as they were. They
' sold all out' and bought a farm in
Montgomery county.. "The l best
.is the cheapest; so all new articles
were bought to commence with, and
their little savings - soon disappeared.
Well, the whole is to be sold at
public sale this spring, and with the
few hendred dollars that will remain,
they will go back to' "live with the
- children" till something turns up.
This is the history of htmdreds•
People should know that -farming is
a' business like all others. It has to
be learned like other business ; built
up. gradually as . others 'are, and it
requires the same constant and
regular attendance. This is the way
to make the farm pay.--,GerMantown

When anthracite was inroduced as
a domestic fuel, its econamy,especial
ly from a labor-saving point of, view,
soon made it popular.- By and by
the expeAence on its ; effects and the
progress of
_science made clear its.,
deleterious properties, and showed
;that a man should burn anthracite
coal as he should live in a tenement
house—because he "Could get nothing
better—not otherwise. Yet Ameri
cans of comfortable,nay, large means,
go on burning anthracite,- merely
because other Americans do the same.
One of the leadino members of the
New York bar has e always burned
wood, not only in his-library at home
but in leis office "down town." One
of his clients (naturally a man of-for
tune)-pays him a business visit there,
and exclaims, "Why, Mr. E—, you
must be very rich to burn wood.
Don't 'Yon find -it very expensive ?"
"Yes." says•E—, it is very . expen
sive. Sometimes it costs me thirty
dollars a month more than anthracite
coal would cost. But, Mr. Smith,
my health is worth a greatideal more
to me than thirty dollars a month."
Even the possessors of some leisure
as 'well as wealth prefer to`to with
the crowd, in the very matters where
not only do we find scope and de
mand for originality, but we might
suppose that the exertion -to .invent
or discover something peculiar would
be an amusement. Take female
dress forliastance. Without going
so far ap to say that every_ woman
(and every man, too) has - a fashion
Specially becoming to her (or him),
stilt Nte might say, without much
exaggeration, it is clear that different
complexions, heights, and shapes
reqmre very different : toilets. Yet
.
few women have the courage or ener
gy to devise anything for themselves.
Even the Parisians, apparently the
most competent in such matters,
have delivertithemselves blindly to
-.- the .yoke of a man-milliner. 'So, too,
with bur fashionable ainners. ; In a
city society you find two or three
• . standard types ,of dinner, according
= to theciv' eaith• land liberality of the
host and the caterer whom he • em
ploys accordingly, and from these
there is no variance. The only man
who has a dish of his own to give
..you is generally seine semi-Bohemian.
;It is Often hard enough to meet the
(same people week -after week
without having to encounter
the self-same dinners, ortikaiversified
by - an-occasional change in the wine
list.--" Casual Cogitations," by Carl
Benson, in May Galaxy.
