Plant Corn Early;
• ,
I came tpo Nebraska in 1857--wag
obliged' to stack my first crop in a
pile upon the ground, which by the' ,
following spring had become , some-
What wasted by stock tramping it
-into the ground. I observe that
which`Was tramped in deep rotted,
while all that i near the surface
spouted and grew vigorously, coming
up with the first vegetation of spring.
When my field corn, planted about
the middle of May; was -just , coming
the,corn upon this volun
teer piece was large and hard enough
for the greater, being large and well
- developed. The dry time. of the
summer approaching just now, my
field corn' was forbidden to come to
full maturity, being light and' loose
upon the cob, and badly filled out at
the end. .My field, corn was worked
bell, while no labor was bestowed
upon the volunteer piece, and uponl
n fair estimate the volunteer corn
was one-half the best.
This• accident becemeiny instructer
to plant early under a light cover,
just cleverly hiding, the corn from
sight and scent of mice and the for
aging army of corn robbing animals.
Having' done so, I have abundantly
proved that Nebraska is equal to any
of the United States in the produc
tion ofOtis great staple. It has been
.\=. the ado ration of strangers visiting
our State to behold my field of corn
nt growing time; high up, when
others-along their route were rang
ing `from one to six inches high, and
some just planting.
Pl:Lotice, too, that all the farriersl
of Nebraska who plant early and tend
their, crops well have full crib faa
bear concurrent testimony with my
self that early platting will giye corn
time' . tomature before the hot-winds
•of summer injure it. Our eiperience
proves that spring frosts are no in
jury to corn, for 'it will come again
as often *as bit 'down.---Cor: lows

How to Select flour.
1. Look at its color ; if it is white,!
with a slightly yellowish or straw
colored .tint, it is a good sign. •If it
is very white, with a blueish cast, or
%with black specks; in it, the flour is
; not,good.
'2. Es.amine its adhesiveness—mot
and knead a little of it between the'
flu'geri ; if it.works dry and , elastic,
it is good. ; if it works soft dud
sticky, i is poor. Fl - 9 - ur made from
spring wheat is likely t 9 be sticky.
3. Throw a lump—of dry flour
iigainA a dry, smooth;Terpendicular
surface ; if it adheres in a lump the
fliiiir has life in 'it ; if it falls. like
powder it is bad. •.
4. Squeeze some of the, flour in
. your hand ; if it •rotiins ,tie shape
' given by the pressure, that, too, is a
.good sign.
Flour that will stand all these
tests it is safe' io buy. These modes
were given by old flour dealers, • and
we make no appology . for printing
them, as they 'pertain to a ,
.matter
. that concer4, - „,everybody, namely, the
' quality of that which is the "staff ol
life.

Rose Cutting. ,
Max - Klose, an ,experienced gar
dener, says :
"Instead of throtiu„,r , my prunings
away.last spring - limed them as cut
tin,,s-7-put a. 11.1.4 lot of them, about
aolozeti or -more n a marmalade jar
filled with coarse sand and . water,
with sufficient of the _ f latter to be
• ahout a quarter of 'an- inch or so
above the sand. I then plunged the
jars into a slight hotbed, and let the
cuttings have.ll the light and sun
p)s-;:ble—never shading once." Af
ter eight. weeks he examined the jars,
and found the roots to' fill them, and
• the shoots in the healthiest condition.
• NOthing could be more so. He adds:
"Out of sd?out 150 cuttings of three
•
dozen kinds of roses, I- only missed
striking fifteen, which think is a
eery encouraging result ; anyhow, I
shall consider it the road royal, and
experiment again in a similar man
ner ijithe . summer, when.l shall pay.
• more attention to the preparing of
the cuttings and the way they will
-strike the readiest."
Horse Shoeing.
The New York Spirit of the Times
tells us how to shoe horses. Vander- '
hilt's race hOrse, "Mountain Boy,"
was troubled with corns'. The Com-
Modore - being convinced that it was
the fault of bad shoeing, his investi
gating mind was struck . with the
.errbr of cutting away the frog of a
horse's foot. "The frog must have a
purpose ; why do. we cut it out ?"
This reasoning led to the invention
of the Goodenough horse-shoe, which
protects the foot against corns and
other ailments. - The shoe has pecu
liarities which causes its. adoption
by several of the largest omnibus
railways in New . York. - Goodett
otigh's system forbids tampering
with the frog of the • feet. This
spongy provision of 'nature acts as a
buffer at every - step the foot takes,
and it is cruet to cut it away. Van
' -derbnilt says the adoption of. this
'systeni - soon cured all his hotses of
any trouble in their feet.
How TO RAISE COWS FOR THE DAM.
—The American Stock Journald says:
A heifer that is designed for the dairy
should be brought up with great
care, and in it,inanner that will tend
to make bcr grow, and bring out al
her good - qualities..
We will suppose that a heifer has
brought up in such a way'to the

thrifty condition, and has every in-
Aication of becoming a good cow.
We should recommend that she
-;:nutild now• be mated - with the bull,
as by beginning thus early; we can
control in a great measure het' future
development. As the ensuing five or
sit sears will bring out whatever of
