Every one has observed that a prin'..- ed paper after having been, burnt, if not -subjected to a strong draft or roughly handled, retains its original form, and that the printing is dis tinct and legible, and appears as if it had been raised or embossed on the paper, but that if it is touched never so gently it crumbles into dust. Kota in this condition are frequent ly received at the Department for re demption. The counter subjects each note and fragment of a note to a careful inspection in a strong light, under a powerful glass, until she de f.( cmities the denomination and issue, a-e.l then pastes it, upon a piece of thin, tough 'Taper. in order that it may be, ,safer handled. But this paqing,,by destroying the raised or _embossed appearance, at once forever reeludes all chance of again identi fying/ the kind , or denomination of the note., llencefOrth it is but a plain, black piece of paper, giving no indication that it 'ever represeated mow. ,It is therefore very necessa ry that the counter should be quite sure that her, judgment is correct be fore the note is pasted upon the pa per. She must also, —a most diffi cult task,—determine whether the note is genuine or counterfeit. And yet counterfeits i are discovered by these experts among the charred re mains of notes with almost as much certainiy 'as among perfect notes. Charred notes of National banks have occasionally - come into the possession of the Department, and have bin' restored in this manner and returned for redemption to the banks which issued them, accompanied by the af fldavits',-of the counters that they were the remains of notes of the banks to which they, wens returned: In most casei they were promptly and cheerfully redeemed. But owe `sionally 03. surly bank officer, unable or unwilling to trace any resemblance to bank notes, or at leastto the notes of his bank, in the plain black pieces of •paper returned to him, and influ enced perhaps by a desire to effect a little saving for the stockholders, re fused to redeem and challenged the Department to the proof. All posi tive ocular proof having been de stroyed when the notes were restored and pasted, the Department was compelled to submit to the loss. Once some of •these experts were granted leaves of absence, without pay from the •governnent, for the purpose of restoring a large quantity of burnt money belonging to Adams Express Company. This was per , mitted partly because it wits'lnown ' that there was no one else who could performl the service, without which the company would be subjected to great loss, but principally because the company offered, to / Tay them much more - foi their time and- labor than they were receiving from the government, and it was thought that their long and faithful_services justly entitled them to thip ( addition to their meagre salaries: The money was taken: from safes - .recovered from the wreck of a burnt steamer (Which had been lying for fonr,or five years at, the bottom of the Mi§sissippi, and the notes were so burnt, decayed, and damaged as to be absolutely worth less, unless identified and restored. Yet nearly every note of the one bun . dred and eighty-one thousand dollars in United States and National Bank, notes recovered rwas restored with unerring certainty f and -redeemed at its full faCe value.: The Chicaga and Boston fires have for the last year and a half furnished ' burnt ;mites enough to keep all the experts of the office pretty constantly employed.— "An Hour „Among the Greenbacks," Scribner 's for April. THE USES OF SNOW. Now, that the snow has left us, we begin to' appreciate all the advanta ges of a snow winter. For months NVQ have adinired the beauty of a snow landscape. We have had all the enjoyment of snow-balling, coait ing, sledding; and sleighing parties, but our thoughts have rarely gone beyond admiration and enjoyment. Now, that, the spring has come, let us look at some of the practical re sultsto be derived from the heavy fall of snow we had last winter. We all know that the cold becomes great er the higher we rise in the air / The summit of a mountain is colder than the base. When the cold is very se vere in the upper regiOns of the at biosphere, it freezes the particles which form,_the clouds. These fro zen particles descend in the shape of small stare; with si= points and seve ral of thcAe joined together 'make a flaky Innis called snow. - Snow is from ten to twelve times lighter than water, and the quantity of matter contained iu snow is so small in pro portion to its bulk, that it falls very slowly„ From ,the loose texture of snow, and its containing so int* air, it is a very bad conductor of heat, and so forms a covering for the earth. In winters of great severity the soil is sometimes 40 degrees warmer than the surfa'be of the over lying snow. The substantial, bdne- fits that follow such heavy falls of snow as we had this last winter are very great ; 'and hardly realized ex- cepting by the farmer. Snow is a good fertilizer. As we begin to question the best agencies for culti vating and enriching the earth, we find that natuo has been already at work. The soil requires less manure this spring, than It did last spring, When the Aal of snow had been com paratively. small. Last year the soil had no protection froth the cold, and the destruction of trees' plants and winter'grains-was an ithmense loss to the country. This year the ground has been se well protected from the cold by the snow, that the fields will be green earlier, the trees be 'more ' hardy, and the'soil er, than -they have been for y seasons. 11!
